The shed door rattles under a passing truck, then stills. Dust hangs over the map sketched on the floor, and the south freight tunnel waits beyond the next alley like a narrow promise.

Now. I pull them off your tail. You two keep moving, and don’t look back.

Mara

Buster, I am with you. No tricks, no orders. Just the route out.

Outside, headlights sweep across the gap under the door. Voices close in, hard and urgent. The Veteran Hero shifts to block the opening, ready to draw the handlers away for a few precious seconds.

Buster moves to the tunnel entrance with Mara at his side, each step carrying them toward the dark service passage and away from the city that has hunted them both.

The first handlers spill into view at the far end of the lane, too late to stop the escape route unless they catch Buster now. The tunnel mouth yawns ahead, black and low, and the final choice is his.

Buster explodes through the tunnel mouth, boots scraping grit as he clears the threshold in one hard burst. Behind him, the alley light snaps smaller, swallowed by the low concrete throat.

The cost lands with the motion, his shoulder clipping the frame and leaving a hot sting along the cut hand Mara bound. He keeps moving anyway, and the dark opens to take him in.

Mara follows fast, close enough to catch his elbow, then the pair vanish past the first bend. Outside, shouted voices crash against the tunnel mouth and lose themselves in the echo.

Go. I have their attention.

The Veteran Hero steps squarely into the alley light, a living decoy at the shed door, while the handlers’ figures bunch and hesitate at the wrong end of the lane.

For one breath, the map dust, the stuttering tower relay, and all the ugly tracking work behind them feel far away. The tunnel takes their footsteps and gives back only darkness and the faint drip of water.

This way, Buster. We are really doing this.

The Final Decoy and Escape

The shed vanished behind them as the tunnel swallowed the last light.

Keep moving, Mara. We made it this far.

Mara

Yeah. And we are not stopping now.

At the alley mouth, the Veteran Hero held the line while the handlers drifted the wrong way, buying them their freedom.

Buster and Mara went on into the freight tunnel, shoulder to shoulder, until the city noise became a distant rumor. Behind them, the shed and the handlers were left to the dark and the Veteran Hero's sacrifice. For the first time that night, escape felt real.
