The service spine shudders around Buster Jones and the unmasked Hunter Captain. Ahead, a flickering work light strobes over a split in the corridor, one route rising, one route dropping into darkness.

Mara
Surface access is up there. If you want out, that is the way.
Her voice is raw, no longer clipped with command. Behind them, the breach groans as the facility keeps tearing itself apart.

Leo
Buster, please. Don't let them catch us again.

Buster Jones
We move together.
The Hunter Captain flinches at that, then nods once. She lowers her hand from the mask and points into the brighter passage, choosing a side of the hunt for the first time.

Mara
Then trust me until we reach the surface. After that, I answer for what I did.
A warning klaxon dies in static somewhere deeper in the walls. Buster has a way forward now, and the woman who built this nightmare is walking it beside him.
“I listen to the captain and kead the way for them”
SUCCESS (Good Perception, rolled +1)

Buster takes the brighter route first, and the service spine answers with a tremor that runs under his feet. The Hunter Captain moves with him, one hand out to guide, while the Teenager hurries after them along the wall.
Ahead, the split in the corridor proves real. The rising passage slopes toward a laddered hatch rimmed in white emergency light, while the lower branch caves into shadow and dust.

Mara
Up. That hatch leads to the surface access spine.
Buster follows her angle without hesitation, and the group commits to the climb. Behind them, the jagged breach flashes once with blue sparks, then sinks back into the wall of groaning metal.

Leo
We are really getting out, right?
The Captain does not look back. She plants her palm on the ladder rung and starts up, forcing the route to prove itself one step at a time.
The hatch above them rattles, and cold air leaks down through the seam.
“I climb the ladder with them”
SUCCESS (Legendary Athletics, rolled -2)

Buster drives upward into the ladder run, and the service spine shudders around him like a throat trying to swallow him back. His hand clamps the rung, the metal bites, and he keeps climbing.
The Hunter Captain goes ahead, one arm reaching into the white glare above, while the Teenager hustles in behind Buster with their shoulders tucked tight against the wall. The floor below gives a long, ugly groan.
A pulse of hot dust drops from the hatch seam as Buster hauls himself level with the opening. Cold air spills over his face, sharp and clean compared to the smoke below.

Mara
Keep moving. The surface access spine is above this hatch.
Buster gets through first, and the climb costs him, his palm scraping raw on a jagged edge as he clears the lip. Behind him, the ladder rattles hard enough to clang through the shaft.

Leo
That is definitely outside, right?
The hatch yawns open onto a brighter passage, and the three of them reach it as one broken breath. Below, the lower branch disappears into shadow and collapse, cut off for good.
“I keep climbing to the surface”
FAILURE (Terrible Agility, rolled -1)

Buster reaches for the next rung, but the ladder jerks sideways. Something above has shifted, and the hatch frame pinches hard against the rails.
Dust spills down in a choking sheet. The upper passage is still there, but the opening is narrowing by the second.

Mara
The spine is collapsing at the seam. If we force it, we all get buried.

Leo
Buster, the way up is moving.
A harsh metallic shriek rolls through the shaft as the hatch edge grinds lower, catching on Buster's shoulder and stopping his climb cold.
Cold air still pours from above, but now it blows past a crooked gap too small for an easy push. The surface is close, and the route is failing in place.

Mara
We need another way, or we wait and lose the opening.
“I brace the hatch and hold it”
FAILURE (Legendary Strength, rolled -3)

Buster jams both hands against the hatch frame and heaves, trying to hold the gap. The metal shudders in his grip, but the seam keeps sliding shut, grinding down over his forearms.
The frame slips past his brace by a fraction, then another. Dust bursts loose again, and the opening narrows into a crooked slit that bites at the ladder below.

Mara
It is going. Move, or we lose it.

Leo
Buster, I cannot fit through like this.
Buster keeps forcing upward, but the hatch wins the contest. His hold turns from a stop into a stall, and the passage above becomes a closing trap instead of a route.

Mara
Let it drop. We need a new angle now.
Cold air whistles through the last open crack, then the seam jolts again, pinning the ladder in a harsher squeeze. The way forward is no longer usable as an exit.
“I ask the Captain to find a side exit”
FAILURE (Fair Reasoning, rolled +0)

Buster stops trying to force the hatch and turns his attention sideways, scanning the cracked spine instead of the shrinking slit above.

Buster Jones
There has to be another way out. Find me a side exit.

Mara
There is a maintenance pocket below the brace, but it is tight. If it still opens, it leads toward the outer skin.
She points past the ladder, where a warped access panel sits half-buried in dust and bent conduit.

Leo
That panel looks smaller than the hatch, but it might actually hold.
The hatch groans again overhead, and the crooked slit clamps down another inch, but the side panel remains intact.

Mara
Move now. I can clear it if you give me room.
“I pry open the side panel”
SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled +4)

Buster plants both hands on the bent panel and yanks. The metal shrieks, then gives way with a dusty snap.
Cold outside air pours through the opening, sharper than the heat behind them. Beyond the panel, a narrow maintenance chute slopes up toward daylight.

Buster Jones
Open. Go.

Mara
That is a clean route. Good. Keep moving, both of you.
She braces the jagged frame with one arm, clearing the loose wires and dusting debris away from the opening.

Leo
I can see the light. We made it.
The panel hangs open, and for one hard beat the spine is silent except for distant groaning steel. Then a thin red alarm glow flickers back to life somewhere below, urging them on.
“I climb through the maintenance chute”
SUCCESS (Legendary Athletics, rolled +3)

Buster hauls himself into the chute, shoulders scraping metal, and the narrow passage answers with a deep, failing groan from below.
He gains the upper lip in one powerful pull, and the shaft beyond opens onto a slanted service run washed in pale daylight.
Behind him, the side opening stays wide, but the red pulse from the spine weakens as the lower levels fall farther away.
The Hunter Captain looks up after him, then steadies the frame with both hands, her posture shifting from pursuit to cover.

Mara
Go. I have the opening.
The Teenager follows Buster’s line of sight and sees it, a maintenance ladder leading into a bright hatch rimmed with cold air and daylight.
As Buster clears the top, he spots a maintenance placard bolted beside the hatch, its arrows pointing to a surface access corridor already lit and unblocked.
“I climb to the surface access corridor”
SUCCESS (Terrible Agility, rolled +2)

Buster plants both hands on the lip and hauls himself into the surface access corridor. The hatch frame flexes, but it holds.
Cold daylight spills over him, turning the red underglow behind him into a dim stain far below.
The Teenager climbs after him, and the Hunter Captain keeps one braced hand on the opening, still holding the route open for the last push.

Mara
Keep moving. This corridor runs clean to the surface.
Buster’s eyes catch the maintenance placard by the hatch, its arrows confirming the corridor ahead instead of another dead-end tunnel.
The lower spine groans once, then falls silent as the collapse finishes sealing the escape behind them.

“I head for the surface with them”
SUCCESS (Terrible Agility, rolled +2)
Buster leaves the hatch behind and starts down the surface corridor. The Hunter Captain releases her brace and steps in behind him, while the Teenager comes up on his other side, all three of them moving under the cold daylight.

Leo
That light means there’s an outside.
Ahead, the corridor bends toward a brighter service door. Behind them, the hatch sits open only a little longer, the red glow from below already shrinking to a slit.

Mara
This way. The surface door is still clear.
Buster keeps pace as the floor rattles once under the fading collapse. The maintenance placard and its arrow point straight on, and the chamber underfoot is no longer part of the route.

Leo
We’re really out?
The Hunter Captain looks back only once, then turns forward again, guiding them toward the door with one hand lifted, signaling the way ahead as the hatch behind seals the last of the danger away.

“I open the surface door”
SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled +0)

Buster plants both hands on the service door and drives it upward. The latch gives with a hard metallic crack, and cold daylight spills through the opening.
The door swings free. Beyond it, the surface landing waits open and wind-swept, with no hunters in sight and no barricade left to stop them.

Leo
It opens. It really opens.

Mara
Move. Now.
Behind them, the corridor seals itself with a low groan, locking the lower route out for good. The last red glow from below dies under the bright sky.
The Hunter Captain steps through first, then the Teenager, both of them framed against the exit. Buster holds the door high as the wind hits their faces.
