Far north of Vaeluun and Sereveth’s sanctuary, the basin rests beneath cold limestone. Three copper lines brighten without tugging at anyone, and one traces a path below the dark water.

Aren Vey
That resonance is familiar. It is a return channel, not a command. Something was forced through it, and the damage remains below.
The blue line bends toward a narrow fissure beneath the basin, carrying the faint echo of a pattern split under pressure. No current touches Sil’Thalis, Bren, or Aren.

Bren
I see no change in our freedom. The route is open, but it is not asking us to enter. We can leave it untouched.

Aren Vey
We can ignore it, return by the stair, or approach the damage without accepting whatever caused it. I will not mistake access for permission.
Aren keeps the oval token at his side rather than presenting it to the basin. Behind them, the blue-veined stair remains open toward the distant upper chamber and the way back.

Bren
The choice is still yours, Aren. If we approach, we witness the channel only. We do not let it decide what any of us becomes.

Repair the damaged return channel
“" what is deciding what for us exactly" I ask”
SUCCESS (Legendary Diplomacy, rolled +0)

Sil'Thalis
What is deciding what for us exactly?
Sil’Thalis’s question hangs over the dark basin. The copper lines continue to shine, but none crosses toward him, Bren, or Aren.

Aren Vey
Nothing is deciding for us. The channel can answer a willing approach, a refusal, or a return, but it cannot choose which one we make.

Bren
The basin decides only whether the route responds to consent. It does not decide what consent means, who enters, or what we become afterward.

Aren Vey
The damage below was made when someone forced a return through it. The resonance remembers pressure, but memory is not authority.
The blue line dims as Aren speaks, leaving the fissure visible but inactive. The stair behind them remains open, and the basin offers no summons.

Bren
So the decision remains ours. We can examine the damage, leave, or return, and the channel cannot turn any choice into a command.
““Enough.” I step directly into the damaged return channel and seize the fractured current with my magic. I force the entire trapped resonance through my living weave, using myself as the release path. I do not moderate the load or retreat when it begins to hurt. Either the obstruction breaks, or I do.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Magic, rolled +3)

Sil'Thalis
Enough.
Sil’Thalis steps into the fractured return channel and seizes its resonance with magic. The entire trapped current surges through his living weave, burning across the dark mark and rebuilt staff.
He does not moderate the load or retreat. Copper lines flare around him, then split cleanly as the forced passage tears free from the basin’s obstruction.

Aren Vey
The pressure is breaking. You are carrying the release through yourself.
The damaged channel collapses into harmless blue motes. Beneath the basin, a dry passage opens, revealing the original return route and a sealed chamber beyond it.

Bren
You broke the obstruction, but the current left something behind. I can see a second path, untouched by the forced return.
Sil’Thalis emerges from the channel with his magic intact, though his weave trembles and the staff vents a sharp blue glow. The freed resonance settles into the basin without claiming anyone.
““Leave, follow, I don't care. We've traveled this far. Unless either of you has a better idea, I'm going through the passage.””
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +1)

Sil'Thalis
Unless either of you has a better idea, I am going through the passage. We have traveled this far.
Sil’Thalis enters the dry passage beyond the basin. The blue motes settle behind him, and the rebuilt staff vents once before its glow steadies.

Bren
I have no better idea. I follow by choice, and I will not let the passage decide what this means.

Aren Vey
Then I follow as Aren. The return route is open behind us, and nothing here owns the choice.
Bren and Aren cross after him. The passage widens into a sealed chamber of pale stone, where the untouched second path ends at a circular copper door.
The door bears no house mark, command, or name. As Sil’Thalis reaches it, a clean blue line records their arrival without drawing on their will.

Aren Vey
This is beyond the forced return. Whatever waits here was preserved separately, and it has recognized us without claiming us.
