Sil’Thalis wakes as warmth leaves the healing circle. The staff’s blue flaw glows steadily, and sensation remains restored from his palm to his elbow.

The passage continues deeper. Veyr stayed by the basin, and the threshold remains open behind us. Bren, Sil’Thalis, will you follow?

Aren leads them through the dry maintenance passage. Bren walks beside Sil’Thalis, while springwater murmurs behind and the folded threshold remains visible in the distance.

The passage opens into a limestone chamber surrounding the spring’s source. Mineral light shines through clear stone, revealing abandoned belongings arranged carefully along the bank.

These were left by travelers who came before the commands. A cloak clasp, a child’s carved horse, a broken knife, and that silver thread.

Aren stops before a small oval object of dark wood and pale metal. His breath catches. Its surface bears a worn door-shape, familiar beneath layers of mineral dust.

I know this. I cannot explain how. If it belongs to me, it may show what was mine before Merovan’s pattern divided me.

“" do these keepsake make sence to you Aren?" I ask”

Sil'Thalis

Do these keepsakes make sense to you, Aren?

Aren studies the cloak clasp, carved horse, broken knife, and silver thread. When his gaze reaches the oval door-shaped token, the mineral light shivers across its surface.

Aren Vey

Aren Vey

Yes. Not as a collection, but as departures. The clasp belonged to someone who left in haste. The carved horse was carried by a child. The knife was broken rather than surrendered.

Aren Vey

The silver thread marked a promise to return, though I do not know whose promise. This token was mine. I carried it before Merovan, and I used it to find a door that accepted refusal.

As Aren touches the oval token, its pale metal edge cuts his fingertip. A bead of blood darkens the door-shape, and the keepsakes answer with faint, separate glimmers.

Aren Vey

The others are not mine, but I remember their meanings now. They were left by people choosing what to carry, abandon, or protect. The token shows me a path, not ownership.

A narrow outline appears in the limestone behind the keepsakes, forming a dry doorway. It opens onto descending darkness while the spring continues flowing freely behind them.

Aren, lead us through the doorway you once found.

Aren Vey

Aren Vey

I will. Stay close enough to question me, and keep far enough behind to turn back freely.

Aren presses the oval token to the door-shaped mark. The limestone parts without grinding, revealing a descending passage lit by thin veins of blue mineral light.

Bren

I follow by choice, Aren. I will witness what happens, but I will not let the passage decide what it means.

Aren steps through first. Sil’Thalis follows, with Bren behind him, while the spring remains audible through the open doorway and the return route stays unobstructed.

Aren Vey

I remember this descent now. Merovan’s pattern could not enter here. The door accepted refusal before it accepted arrival.

The doorway closes only after all three have crossed, leaving no seal or command behind. Below, the passage opens toward a chamber where several unlit doorways wait in the stone.
