The residents return to the vaulted square as the four crystals settle into a quiet rhythm. The bell’s distant vibration remains audible, but it no longer bends anyone’s speech.

The boundary is stable. I will keep the map as my observation, and the elder’s account beside it, without making either the village’s official truth.

Bren lays the plain map beside a fresh sheet bearing the Dunmire elder’s separate testimony. She leaves a visible space between them, marking source and uncertainty in different hands.

For the first time, we can speak without the bell interrupting us. We will decide together what we witnessed, and each person may still keep their own account.

Lanterns brighten across the square. Adults step from their thresholds, while children remain close to familiar doorways; no command crosses the restored boundary.

Sil’Thalis, you brought protection without taking our testimony. What do you wish to ask now that the bell cannot answer for us?

The village can finally choose its words, but choice must remain theirs even when the danger below becomes clearer.

“" Bren, please get detailed accounts of all villagers. I wish to inspect something alone" I tell Bren. I then return to the pond passage.”

Bren, please gather detailed accounts from every villager. I wish to inspect something alone.

I will ask what each person witnessed, chose, and remembers, keeping every account separate. I will not turn their words into a village decree.

Bren turns toward the residents, inviting them in small groups to speak at their own pace. The elder gestures toward the western stair, leaving its access open.

Sil’Thalis returns alone through the protected service route. The bell’s summons remains audible behind the boundary, but its pressure cannot reach him or shape his thoughts.

At the pond passage, he inspects the crescent boundary and the submerged bell through the ward’s broken command-pattern. The blue lines reveal a second threshold beneath the waterline, built to receive names without granting them authority.

The threshold contains no Domini, Xar, or Void-Fed signature. It distinguishes three acts: hearing the bell, answering it, and opening the sunken chamber. Only the last requires a freely spoken witness.

The inspection yields a clear fact: the bell cannot open the chamber by calling names. It needs a person beyond its influence to confirm what was heard, while the return route remains protected.

“I reach out through the arcana and see if I can sence another way in”

SUCCESS (Fair Arcana, rolled -2)

The Village Finds Its Voice

Sil’Thalis reaches through the arcana, extending his senses along the crescent boundary and beneath the pond without touching the bell’s call.

The ward separates hearing from authority, revealing a second route: a narrow, waterless shaft behind the sunken chamber, entering through an unmarked seam in the eastern stones.

The chamber has another entrance, beyond the bell’s claim and outside every house’s signature.

His perception follows the hidden passage completely. It descends from a dry shelf beneath the pond, bypasses the name-threshold, and opens into the chamber’s rear without requiring a spoken witness.

The sensing costs him. Arcane cold burns across his marked palm, and two casting fingers stiffen as the boundary rejects his probing touch, though the route remains clear.

A faint blue trace settles along the eastern wall, marking the concealed entrance for him alone. The return path remains open, and the bell cannot command this approach.

“I draw in the ambient magical energy to work the numbness out of my hand and fingers”

SUCCESS (Superb Magic, rolled +0)

Sil’Thalis draws the ambient magic inward, gathering the pond’s cool resonance and the ward’s steady blue rhythm without touching the bell’s summons.

The energy threads through his marked palm and stiff fingers. Arcane cold loosens, dissolving into warmth as sensation returns along each joint.

The boundary yields power without yielding authority.

He guides the gathered current through the damaged pathways, smoothing the numbness rather than forcing it aside. His hand flexes, then closes fully.

The blue trace along the eastern wall remains undisturbed. His casting fingers answer him again, steady and capable, while the concealed entrance stays clear.

Far above, Bren’s voice carries faintly through the protected route as villagers give their separate accounts. Sil’Thalis remains alone beside the pondward boundary.

The bell continues to call beneath the water, but its influence cannot follow him. Restored and uncommanded, Sil’Thalis stands ready before the hidden approach.

“I enter the hidden eastern passage”

SUCCESS (Superb Agility, rolled +2)

The Village Finds Its Voice

Sil’Thalis follows the blue trace along the eastern wall. The unmarked seam parts beneath his restored hand, revealing a dry stone passage beyond the pond’s reach.

He enters alone. Behind him, the seam closes without a lock or command, leaving the protected return route intact and the bell’s summons muted by distance.

Sil'Thalis

Sil'Thalis

The passage was built to bypass the name-threshold.

The narrow shaft descends beneath the submerged chamber, its walls carrying no Domini, Xar, or Void-Fed mark. Dry air moves upward from deeper stone.

At the bottom, the passage opens behind the sunken chamber. The bell hangs beyond a pale boundary, visible but unable to reach him through the unclaimed approach.

A second threshold waits in the rear wall, etched with three empty circles and no instruction. Its surface records his arrival as witnessed entry, while the way back remains open.

Far above, Bren’s voice fades into the village’s separate testimony. Sil’Thalis stands within the hidden chamber at last, unseen by the bell and answerable only to his own witness.
