The open threshold gives off a quiet blue glow. Nothing crosses it. In the circular vault, the air settles, and Bren spreads her tablets beside the untouched alcove.

Bren

Bren

Let us make the record plain before we descend again. What has been proven?

She places one tablet for each certainty: the witness-pattern is not identity, the ancient record predates both houses, and authority over the crossing cannot be claimed by inheritance, strength, or ignorance.

Bren

Bren

And what remains uncertain? Teren's memories. Maerith Vey's choices. The purpose of the deeper systems. We can preserve doubt without making it an accusation.

A second row of tablets marks the limits. Bren leaves the Domini seal and Xar scar outside the central account, their symbols dimmed and separate from the blue line.

Bren

Bren

Nothing here must become House Domini's truth, or House Xar's crime, simply because either house touched it. If we carry this record forward, we carry its boundaries too.

Bren rests her hand beside the blank alcove, not upon its mark. The vault remains still, offering time rather than pressure, while the tablets wait for Sil'Thalis's review.

“Instead of condemning or absolving either House, let the truth land where it may, lass. That way no one can keep score. Their deeds shall be recorded equally, to let history judge them, for good or ill.” I pause in thought "No scoreboard. No balancing atrocities against virtues. Record each deed for what it is." I coldly state

Sil'Thalis

Instead of condemning or absolving either House, let the truth land where it may, lass. No one keeps score. Record each deed equally, and let history judge it, for good or ill.

I pause over the tablets. The blue line steadies, then divides the central record into separate entries, granting neither House a scale, a pardon, nor a shared tally.

Sil'Thalis

Sil'Thalis

No scoreboard. No balancing atrocities against virtues. Record each deed for what it is.

Bren

Then a noble act cannot purchase silence for a crime, and a crime cannot erase a noble act. Each remains answerable to its own evidence.

The vault accepts the boundary. Its blue script etches two independent columns into the tablets, but the effort drains the warmth from my marked hand, leaving the fingers numb and the witness-mark dim.

Bren

Bren

I can stand beside this record, Sil'Thalis. But the deeper systems may contain deeds outside both houses' accounts. Do we preserve those as a third record, or place them under the same rule?

“A third record, lass. The same rule.” I study the new columns for a moment. “We separate the accounts so no one's deeds become another's burden. But we do not change the measure simply because we find a new name.” I look toward the deeper passage. “Whatever waits below gets neither privilege nor condemnation from us. Record what it does. Let its deeds answer for themselves.”

Sil'Thalis

A third record, lass. The same rule. We separate the accounts so no one's deeds become another's burden, but we do not change the measure for a new name. Whatever waits below gets neither privilege nor condemnation. Record what it does, and let its deeds answer for themselves.

The blue line leaves the divided columns and descends toward the deeper passage. A third space opens on the tablets, marked only by an unclaimed circle.

The numbness in Sil'Thalis's marked hand recedes enough for the witness-mark to shine again, dimly but steadily. The third record accepts no house seal.

Bren

Bren

Then the rule belongs to the evidence, not to the names attached to it. I will keep this third account separate, and judge no deed before its proof is set beside it.

Bren moves the blank tablet into line with the other two. The three records now share one measure while remaining visibly distinct, and the threshold beyond them opens onto darkness threaded with blue script.

Bren

Bren

The passage is ready to be witnessed. Shall I enter the first deed into the third record, or shall we let the deeper system reveal its own account before either of us writes?

I let the deeper system reveal its account

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled -1)

The Boundaries of Truth

The darkness beyond the threshold does not wait for a hand or seal. Blue script rises through it, assembling itself from the three records.

The two house columns become paths of cause and consequence. The unclaimed circle becomes a measure, not a verdict, tracing where each deed altered the vault and where the vault altered the witness.

Bren

Bren

It is not judging the houses. It is showing how truth changes when power touches it.

A final inscription forms across the passage: WITNESS, SEPARATE, RETURN. The deeper system exists to preserve competing accounts, test their effects against one another, and return authority to those who can prove what they saw.

Bren

Bren

Now we know its purpose. It does not choose the rightful history. It keeps histories from devouring one another.

The blue measure reaches Sil'Thalis's marked hand, then divides cleanly between him and Bren. Neither mark commands the passage. Both are required to carry the separate accounts forward.

Bren

Bren

The system names us co-witnesses, but it leaves the next record blank. Will you let it show us the first consequence, or shall we write what this revelation has changed in us?
