The way back opens onto the outer stair. Marek lies unconscious where he fell, while a fresh blue mark glows in the stone beside him. Its RETURN symbol points upward, toward the Hall of Welcome.

Bren

Bren

This was not here when we entered. The vault has made a second record, or someone has interfered with the first.

Bren kneels near the mark without touching it. The blue line divides into two fine strokes, one ending at Marek's hand and the other pointing toward the distant Hall.

Bren

Bren

Separate testimony, separate authority. If the vault returned this through Marek, his orders may be evidence rather than command.

The mark brightens. A brief image forms above the stair: the sealed account, Bren's testimony on one side, Sil'Thalis's on the other, and a third line leading to the Hall of Welcome. The image bears no house seal.

Bren

Bren

It is directing the record back to the Hall, not surrendering it to Domini. We can carry Marek there and test the mark against the archive, or leave him and risk losing the proof.

"I don't have healing spells lass, but this may work" I summon forth a mist of shadows, that form into tenticles, I let two slide into his mind and find a nightmare that will startle him awake.

I do not have healing spells, lass, but this may work.

Therefore, shadow-mist spills from Sil'Thalis's focus and coils across the stair. Two slender tendrils slip into Marek's mind, seeking a nightmare sharp enough to reach him.

The nightmare takes shape, a sealed passage folding endlessly inward while an unseen command repeats without authority. Marek jolts awake, gasping, and the tendrils withdraw into the mist.

Marek

Marek

The crossing... no. I was ordered to make it answer.

His eyes focus on the blue RETURN mark. The line touching his hand flares once, then settles beside his fingers without entering his skin.

Bren

Bren

You are awake. Tell us plainly, Marek. Did your orders name this mark, or did they seek to command what it records?

I stand over him eyes of ice. " I see not only choked, also you over reached." I pause narrowing my eyes , my tone shifts to slow and venomous " explain yourself."

I see more than choking. You overreached. Explain yourself.

Sil'Thalis stands over Marek, his eyes cold as the blue mark burns between them. The stair seems to narrow around the demand.

Marek

Marek

The order named no mark. It named a result. I was to force the crossing open and make every witness answer to the command.

The RETURN line divides into three brief strokes, touching Marek's hand, Bren's testimony, and Sil'Thalis's marked account without entering any of them.

Marek

Marek

I thought the vault would obey the strongest authority. Instead, it took my command as evidence of trespass. The backlash folded the passage around me.

Bren

Bren

Then the mark is measuring the order against the shared account, not granting him control. But his breathing is still uneven. We must get him to the Hall of Welcome.

Eyes fixed on Marek, I ask Bren coldly“Why?” I make no move to help him. Then to Marek. “You believed strength granted authority. The vault has answered that belief. I want to know why you held it.”

Sil'Thalis

“Why?”

Sil’Thalis does not reach for Marek. His question leaves the uneven breathing, the divided mark, and the command itself exposed.

Bren

Bren

“Because House Domini taught its soldiers that resistance proved guilt. Marek mistook obedience from the vault for proof that his order was rightful.”

Sil'Thalis

Sil'Thalis

“You believed strength granted authority. The vault has answered that belief. I want to know why you held it.”

Marek

Marek

“Because strength was the only language either house respected. If I questioned the order, the crossing would remain beyond us, and everyone above would call that failure.”

Bren

Bren

“His reason was inherited, not proven. The mark confirms the command was recorded as trespass, but it does not yet mend what the backlash did to him.”

The blue strokes settle into the inscription beneath the stair: WITNESS, SEPARATE, RETURN. Marek remains conscious, but his breath catches again as the mark waits for the next account.

In the same slow, venomous tone, I keep my eyes on Marek. “Yet here you are, without your so-called strength. Your very culture has failed you.” I finally look to Bren. “Your reason stands, lass. We take him to the Hall.”

“Your reason stands, lass. We take him to the Hall.”

Bren accepts the order. Together, they bring Marek up the outer stair and through the opened way back, carrying the divided proof with him.

At the Hall of Welcome, the archive wards recognize the blue mark without claiming it. Its strokes settle beside Marek’s hand, Bren’s testimony, and Sil’Thalis’s account as separate witnesses.

Marek

Marek

“The command is mine. The trespass is recorded. I will not call it authority again.”

The Hall’s steady warding eases Marek’s breathing and clears his awareness. His condition is stabilized, while the returned evidence remains intact.

Bren

Bren

“The mark corroborates the division. Shall we preserve Marek’s admission beside the others?”

Sil'Thalis gathers the spellbook, arcane focus, Bren's tablets, and Marek's abandoned orders. He takes the lead toward the Hall's outer arch, keeping the divided record together without combining its accounts.

Bren supports Marek beneath one arm while he walks under his own strength. The wards release their hold on the chamber, and the three pass through the opened way into the outer stair.

Marek

Marek

The mark did not obey me. It preserved what I admitted, and nothing more.

A sharp blue flare follows them across the threshold. It does not enter anyone's flesh, but it scorches a narrow line across one of Bren's copied tablets, costing her the clean duplicate of Marek's admission.

Bren

Bren

The original remains safe. This copy does not. We will mark the loss instead of concealing it.

The Hall of Welcome falls behind them as Sil'Thalis leads Bren and Marek onto the outer stair. Beyond the threshold, the blue words WITNESS, SEPARATE, RETURN shine once against the stone, then point down the passage toward a waiting archive ward.

Bren

Bren

That ward is asking for a destination. Do we take Marek to the wardens, or carry this account onward ourselves?
