The Abyss Opens at the GateFissure beneath the Western road
The Abyss Opens at the Gate

The western road buckles under a low, black tremor. The torn shadow at the gate surges, and the sigil on Butch and Sable answers with a hard, shared pulse. The moor below them opens like a wound, lightless and waiting.

The Sentry

The Sentry

Not again. Gods, not this.

The Sentry staggers back from the gate, staring at the crawling dark as if it might climb into him. His hand hovers uselessly over his weapon, but fear has already won.

Sable

Sable

It wants us split. It wants us fed back into it.

The sigil is pulling straight down.

The black mark on Butch's arm tightens, then steadies, as if recognizing the path below. Sable sets her shield and plants herself at his side. Behind them, the broken road goes still, like the whole moor is holding its breath.

Sable

Sable

We go down together, or we end here.

The shadow in the gate lurches one last time, then recoils from the bond between them. Butch stands at the brink of the裂裂裂裂裂裂裂裂裂裂裂裂裂裂裂裂裂裂裂裂裂裂裂裂裂裂裂裂裂裂裂裂裂裂裂裂裂裂 abyss, the source of the corruption below finally exposed.

I descend into the fissure with Sable

SUCCESS (Superb Athletics, rolled -3)

The Abyss Opens at the Gate

Butch lunges first, and Sable matches him step for step. The fissure gives way under their weight, and the two of them drop into the dark together.

Stone scrapes Butch's boot and Sable's shield. The plunge is short, brutal, and clean, then they hit a lower shelf hard enough to rattle the loose rock.

The drop ends in a narrow ledge.

Above them, the road-mouth yaws open like a broken jaw. The black mist thins at the rim, and the gate is left far overhead with the Sentry staring down in frozen dread.

Sable

Sable

Stay close. I have the edge.

Butch lands in a crouch beside her, axe ready, while the glowing black sigil on his arm steadies into a dim, controlled pulse. One of the scattered bounty notices slides over the lip and flutters into the chasm after them, marked in a hand that is not the Guild's.

The Sentry

The Sentry

I saw the seal. I can tell you who carried it.

I ask the Sentry who carried the seal

SUCCESS (Legendary Intimidation, rolled -1)

The Abyss Opens at the Gate

Sable lowers her shield a fraction, still close enough to Butch that their sigils faintly answer one another. The Sentry peers down from the broken road, white-knuckled and shaking, then swallows hard.

The Sentry

The Sentry

It was a rider in a gray cloak. No crest. Just a wax seal with a broken crown, pressed into the writ.

The Sentry

The Sentry

I only saw the hand that carried it, gloved and ink-stained.

The words land like a nail. Sable turns her head toward Butch, her expression tightening into wary certainty as the name is left unspoken but the path is not.

The Sentry

The Sentry

They brought the paper to the gatehouse before dawn. Then the shadow moved after it, like it knew the seal.

Above them, the loose bounty notice settles against the shelf, its broken crown mark clearly visible in the dim light. The hole in the road feels less like a collapse now, and more like a trail finally showing its teeth.

Sable

Sable

So someone delivered the seal, and someone else answered it. Good. Now we know where to start.

New Gift: Tracker's Intuition

The Abyss Opens at the Gate

The moor fell silent at last, the fissure sealed behind them and the road above no longer groaning with that wrong, hungry pressure.

Butch the Wereboar

Butch the Wereboar

We came through the dark, Sable. That is enough for one day.

Sable

Sable

Aye. And we did not come away empty-handed.

The broken crown seal lay between them, dull now, its menace spent.

Butch the Wereboar stood with Sable on the edge of the moor, the corruption broken and the weight of the sigil finally quiet. What had been a trap became a truth, and what had been fear became proof. Together they left the fissure behind, carrying the seal and the end of this chapter with them.
