The pale memory shard flares in Butch's hand, and the vault answers. Its light strips the Hooded Figure's cloak away like ash in a wind.
Under the falling dust, the Hooded Figure is no cloak at all, but a hollow spectral shape, chained by the mayor's debt. The pulse in the shard matches that old bargain exactly.

Sable
So this is the key. The debt was never hidden from the vault, only from me.
The Horned Beast goes still at the threshold, watching the revelation land. Its guarded stance loosens, not with fear, but with the hard relief of a truth finally paid for.

The Horned Beast
The shard held the mayor's claim. It could strip the binding clean.
The vault's collapse slows to a shuddering pause. With the hood gone and the debt exposed, Butch stands in the center of the light, reliquary in one hand, the truth in the other.
“I harness the power of the relic to free the hooded figure”
SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +0)

Butch drives the relic’s glow into the spectral bindings. The dark sigil on its face flares once, and the chains around the Hooded Figure turn to ash.

Sable
At last... the mayor’s debt is not mine to bear.
The hollow shape shudders, then fills out with stolen edges of light. The hood collapses into nothing, and a pale, mortal face is left blinking in the dust.

The Horned Beast
It’s done. The binding is broken.
The vault gives a long, uneasy groan. Stones grind overhead, and a crack of black air opens between the treasure and the wall.

Sable
I am no longer the vault’s mouthpiece. But the collapse is still coming.
The freed figure recoils from Butch, then snaps their gaze to the reliquary in his grip as dust pours down around them. The chamber waits on a choice.
“I use the relics power to get us all to safetey”
SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +0)

Butch turns the reliquary toward the vault's shaking heart. Its sigil burns, and the floor below the treasure heap answers with a steadying hum.
Cracks in the ceiling knit shut in thin black seams. Dust still falls, but the worst of the groan eases into a deep, reluctant creak.

Sable
So that is what it was for. Not leverage, not a chain, but a lock.
The Hooded Figure staggers back a step, then stills as the chamber stops sagging around them. The Horned Beast lowers its head, watching the reliquary glow spread across the floor.

The Horned Beast
The vault holds. We can move.
The treasure mound shifts, then settles into a safe slope. The reliquary comes free in Butch's grasp, its sigil dimmer now, the vault's claim broken.

Sable
Take your prize, Butch. Then decide if you leave me with this ruin.
“Butch hands the relic to the figure and leaves”
FAILURE (Mediocre Agility, rolled -1)

Butch extends the reliquary, but the chamber shudders hard enough to shake dust from the ceiling. The dark tunnel behind the Horned Beast narrows with a wet, grinding sigh, and the threshold stutters under the strain.

Sable
Careful. If that seal slips, we all go back into the guts of it.
The Hooded Figure reaches for the relic, then freezes as the sigil on its face flickers once and bites a thin line of black light into the air between their hands.

The Horned Beast
No. That is not a handoff. That is a trap trying to open.
The treasure mound slumps on the far side of the vault, blocking the easier path out. A fresh crack races across the floor, and cold air leaks up through it like a warning.

Butch
The exit is gone.
The Hooded Figure steps back from the relic, one hand lifted, wary and cornered. The Horned Beast shifts to Butch's flank, ready to break whatever comes next, while the collapsing vault waits for a choice.
“I snatch the reliquary and force the exit”
SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled -1)

Butch snatches the reliquary from the air and drives his weight toward the weak side of the vault. The sigil flares under his grip, and the far wall answers with a deep, unhappy groan.

The Horned Beast
Move. Now.
The Horned Beast throws its shoulder into the narrowing route, forcing it wider as rubble spits from the seam. Cold air surges through the breach, sharp and clean against the vault's wet stink.

Sable
If it opens fully, the debt will notice us.
Butch bears down with brutal force, and the jam of treasure and broken stone gives way. A gap opens where the exit was choked, just large enough to take his bulk and the relic together.

Sable
Wait. That seal is waking up.
The Hooded Figure lunges for the reliquary, but the black sigil spits a lash of light between them. They recoil hard, forced back from Butch and the open gap.
Behind them, the collapsing vault shudders again. Ahead, the breach breathes darkness and the way out hangs open.
