Adventure of Butch 1

The threshold cracks wider, and cold light spills over a sea of gold. Dust rains from the arch as the vault shudders, hungry stone groaning above Butch's head.

At the room's center, a shadow gathers itself into shape, tall and still. It ignores the treasure completely, and fixes on the reliquary in Butch's hand.

The Horned Beast and the Hooded Figure draw back from the threshold, leaving Butch alone before the shadow. The vault floor trembles, and a seam of darkness opens where the keeper stands.

Butch snaps the reliquary down and hurls it aside into the gold, then wrenches up his axe and shotgun in one smooth motion.

The Keeper surges forward through the torn seam, shadow hardening into a long-limbed shape as the vault floor cracks under its step.

Butch meets it head on, axe biting through the dark form while the shotgun blast splits the cold air and drives the thing backward.

The Keeper staggers, its shape unraveling at the chest, and the reliquary lies buried in gold within arm's reach as dust pours from the cracking vault.

Butch closes both hands on the Keeper’s shadowy core and yanks. The thing stretches, then splits with a dry, tearing crack, spilling cold black vapor over the gold.

The two halves jerk apart in his grip. One ragged piece slams into the treasure heap, the other collapses at his boots, unraveling into scraps of smoke.

The reliquary tumbles free from the broken shadow and glints beneath the dust. It rests half-buried in the coins, sigil turned upward.

Its voice thins to a whisper as the torn seam widens and the vault floor gives another shudder. Dust sheets down from above.

The shadow at Butch’s feet sputters once, then goes slack. The relic lies in reach, while the chamber groans around him and the threshold beyond fills with alarm.
