Fog splits like wet cloth. The horned beast surges back into the clearing and rips the lone shoe from the mud, lifting it as if it is prize meat. Its glowing eyes lock on Butch, then the Hooded Figure, measuring both.
Butch stands in the crossroad churn, shotgun and axe ready, while the Hooded Figure keeps their distance. The beast lowers its head and the air shudders with a deep, rumbling growl.

The Horned Beast
Mine.

The Horned Beast
Debt runs here. Blood ran here. This shoe is mine to keep.

The Hooded Figure
So the collector comes back for its mark. That shoe matters more than it looks, Butch.
The beast paws at the mud, shoulder muscles bunching beneath wet hide, and turns half sideways as if ready to spring. The Hooded Figure’s hand slips beneath their cloak, calm but wary, while the crossroads seems to wait for a choice.
“Butch looks at the beast and attempts to soeak with it saying, "monster to monster and brute to brute. You and I aren't so different. Perhaps i may be of assistance to you?"”
SUCCESS (Superb Intimidation, rolled +0)

Butch
Monster to monster, brute to brute, you and I are not so different. Perhaps I may be of assistance to you?
The words land heavy in the fog. The beast does not lunge. It tilts the stolen shoe in its fist, then snorts a low, wet laugh that sounds almost like contempt, almost like recognition.

The Horned Beast
Assistance comes with hands. Hands take. Hands owe.

The Hooded Figure
It speaks true enough. This crossroads keeps accounts, and creatures like it know the ledger better than most men.
Butch’s insult-softened stance keeps the beast from striking, but the close air and the stink of muck still press in. The shoe hangs between them like a token from a grave, and the beast’s gaze never leaves Butch’s face.

The Hooded Figure
There is a name buried in this place, and a bargain older than the stones. That is what it guards.
The beast shifts one step sideways, prize held tight, as if deciding whether Butch is ally, burden, or threat. The fog parts just enough to show the drag marks leading away from the crossroads and into the moor.
“Butvh lowers his weapons and offers a handshake to the beast, declaring he is infact a friend”
SUCCESS (Superb Intimidation, rolled -1)

Butch eases both weapons down and extends a thick, open hand toward the beast, palm steady in the muck. The gesture is blunt, almost ceremonial.

Butch
Friend.
The Horned Beast stares at the offered hand. Its grip tightens around the shoe, then loosens.

The Horned Beast
Hands take. Hands owe. But this one... offers.
It lowers the shoe a little, sniffing the air around Butch’s wrist. Mud sucks at its hooves as it steps closer.

The Hooded Figure
Careful. It is deciding whether you are a debt, or a witness.

The Horned Beast
The shoe is not mine. It is his memory. Taken, and owed back.
The beast presses the shoe into Butch’s hand. Its horned head dips once, wary and formal. A dark smear of bog-water marks Butch’s palm where the beast touched him.

single shoe
“Butch takes the shoe and puts it in his pack, smiling at the beast and saying how "us monsters need to stick together, right?"”
SUCCESS (Superb Intimidation, rolled -1)

Butch slips the shoe into his pack with one big, careful motion. The wet smear on his palm darkens the leather strap as he settles the load back against his hip.

Butch
Us monsters need to stick together, right?
The Horned Beast huffs a low breath that might be a laugh. It eases back a step, shoulders loosening, and the hard line in its posture breaks for the first time.

The Horned Beast
Monster is a hunted word. But yes. We know packs.

The Hooded Figure
Then speak plain, beast. What did the crossroads take from you?

The Horned Beast
A name. Not mine. His. It was bound into the shoe, and into the debt. I keep what was paid until the bargain is answered.
At the mention of the bargain, the beast angles its head toward the moor. The drag marks glisten faintly between the stones, a path waiting in the thinning fog.
“Butch looks at the path, then at the beast and says "a road traveled alone is one that ends with death. I could use another beast to assist me"”
SUCCESS (Superb Intimidation, rolled +0)

Butch lets the words hang between them, all teeth and certainty. The beast stills, then gives a slow, testing nod toward the moor.

The Horned Beast
A road alone ends in a snare, yes. I have walked enough roads to know the shape of one companion, if the bargain holds.
The hooded figure’s attention sharpens, but it does not interrupt. The drag marks glimmer beside the stones like a second path, waiting.

The Horned Beast
I will travel at your side, Butch, until the debt is answered. After that, we see what name remains to me.

The Hooded Figure
Careful. A beast that joins a road may still collect what is owed from it.
Butch’s pack strap bites his palm as he settles it, and the weight of his axe shifts against his leg. The beast’s nostrils flare toward the shoe now hidden away, then toward the moor beyond.

The Horned Beast
I know the way the debt was taken. Follow, and you may hear what the crossroads remembers.
“Then lead the way my friend, i shall watch our backs”
SUCCESS (Mediocre Agility, rolled +1)
