The shoe in Butch’s pack gives off a sickly pulse. At the crossroads, the mud swells, churns, and bubbles like something trying to breathe up through it.
A translucent figure rises from the mire, the Mayor’s face copied in pale ruin. Its mouth works soundlessly, desperate for a name it no longer owns.

The Horned Beast
A debt is slipping its knot. That is what this is.
The Horned Beast plants itself beside Butch, horns low, watching the ghost with grim certainty. The drag marks gleam darker in the wet grass, stretching into the moor.

The Horned Beast
I was made here. Bound here. The debt took shape, and I took the work.
The pale Mayor shudders toward the shoe. The pulse in Butch’s pack quickens, and the beast’s shadow seems to peel away from the crossroads itself.
“Butch quickly draws his gun and shoots the mayor's ghost”
SUCCESS (Legendary Ranged Combat, rolled +1)

Butch snaps his shotgun up and fires. The blast rips through the ghost’s chest, and pale fragments spray back into the mud like torn mist.
The Mayor’s echo jerks sideways, its borrowed face splitting with a wet shimmer of light. The name in the shoe flashes hard inside Butch’s pack.

The Horned Beast
Now. Hold the bargain steady.
The Horned Beast lunges in, horns lowered, and drives its shadow across the ghost before it can cling to the crossroads stones.

The Hooded Figure
Careful. It is trying to take a memory with it.
The pale figure reaches once for the shoe, but the beast’s impact breaks its grip. The bubbling mud goes still for a breath, and the ghost thins to a weak, wavering smear.
Then the shoe gives one sharp pulse, as if something inside it has noticed the wound. The crossroads wait, listening for what falls out next.
“Butch removes the shoe to examine it.”
FAILURE (Terrible Perception, rolled +0)

Butch works the shoe free from his pack, mud still clinging to the seams. The moment it clears the leather, the flash dies to a sickly pulse.
The horned beast freezes. The shoe is not empty, it says without words, but Butch’s grip hides the angle of its mark.

The Hooded Figure
Keep it turning. The crossroads are listening through that thing.
Butch tips the shoe toward the gray light. Inside the worn heel, a faint thread of pale memory clings and trembles, but the glare catches first and blinds the view.

The Horned Beast
It has started to loosen.
The weak smear of the mayor’s echo shivers across the mud and latches toward the shoe’s pulse. The crossroads hums with a debt not yet settled.

The Hooded Figure
One more pull, and whatever was stolen may answer back.
“Butch tells the beast to taje the shoe and do what is needed”
SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +0)

Butch lets the shoe go. It drops into the Horned Beast’s waiting grasp, and the pale thread inside it flares like breath caught in glass.

The Horned Beast
At last. The debt can be faced as it was made.
The beast cups the shoe against its chest, then turns its horns toward the mud where the mayor’s smear shivers. The crossroads hushes around the handoff.

The Hooded Figure
Good. Now it can answer for what was taken.
The pale thread slips free of the heel and stretches toward the beast’s palm, no longer hidden. The memory is revealed, exposed and trembling between them.

The Horned Beast
This debt began here. The name was stolen from this shoe, and the crossroads kept the wound open.
Mud ripples at the edge of the road as the mayor’s echo thins to almost nothing, reaching once and failing to hold.
