Poppy's Adventure

The roost’s stone throat swallows the last of the light. Poppy and Vael step in from the ledge, and the old chamber seems deserted, waiting.

Then a figure rises from the gloom. The Wounded Smith stands whole now, his posture easy, his earlier limp gone. His healed hands rest near the door as if he has been there all along.

Vael’s head snaps up. The Smith smiles, and for the first time Poppy sees it, the stamped seal hidden in his palm, the same mark that led the hunters from road to forge to ravine.

Outside, distant horns answer from the dark below. The roost is no refuge. It is the end of the trail.

Poppy moves first. She drives low across the stone, all coiled muscle and fury, and slams both boots into the Smith’s chest.

The impact folds him backward. His easy smile snaps away as he lifts off his feet and skids toward the open ledge.

Vael lunges, too late. The Smith’s hands claw at empty air, then vanish over the edge into the dark ravine below.

A brief scrape rings out from the drop, then only the wind answers. The stamped seal slips from sight with him.

Poppy catches Vael by the forearm and yanks him back from the brink. His boots scrape hard over the stone, and the open drop loses its pull as his weight comes into her grip.

The wind snakes through the roost’s slit, carrying the faint scrape from the ruined rim above. Amber light trembles across the floor, then steadies on the empty ledge where the Smith vanished.

Vael turns with Poppy still holding him, his gaze snapping from the ravine to the stone walls, searching for the next threat inside the sanctuary they just claimed.

The roost answers with silence, but not safety. Somewhere beyond the entry slit, the pursuit is still coming.

Vael loosens one shoulder and rolls his wrist, as if testing an old ache. The amber glow from the slit slides over the stone floor and over the empty edge where the Smith fell.

He looks to Poppy, then toward the hidden opening, where the roost still feels too small for the two of them. The scrape from the ruined rim fades, but the silence after it feels chosen.

Poppy leaves Stone-walled roost above a ravine behind and arrives at the forest on the other side of the nearby city.

The forest swallows them in cool green shadow, city-noise muted behind the trees. Poppy’s boots touch down on moss and root, and the air smells of rain-soaked bark and woodsmoke.

Vael steps toward a narrow break in the canopy, then glances back to Poppy, weighing the route with a tired, exacting calm. Above them, a slit of pale sky opens between branches like a path being offered.

Vael gives one sharp nod. Amber light catches on his sleeves as he shifts, the change moving through him like a held breath finally released.

Seconds later, dark wings beat once over the roots. Leaves whirl up in a small storm as he lowers himself beside her, already broad enough to bear a rider.

Poppy climbs on, and Vael launches cleanly through the trees. The roost and the trap vanish behind them, while ahead the forest on the far side of the city waits beyond the sunlit haze.
