Vael

Vael’s dragon shape shrinks and loosens into a shivering human body, his breath ragged in the cave’s cold air. Poppy gets them both out of the draft and into the shelter of the stone wall.

The cave is small, dim, and still. Beyond the mouth, the mountains keep their silence, and the shattered world below feels far away for one blessed moment.

Vael

Vael

I... am back. That cost more than I meant to spend.

He folds in on himself, arms tight around his middle, scales gone from sight but not from memory. His hands tremble with exhaustion.

Poppy

Poppy

His transformation leaves him drained.

Vael

Vael

Thank you, Poppy. For the ledge, for the leap, for staying with me.

The words hang warm in the cold. For the first time since the chamber broke apart, the air between them eases. There is space now for rest, for breath, for whatever comes next.

✓ Quest Accepted

Let Vael rest and recover

I sit and cuddle with him to keep him warm as we rest against the stone wall and I keep watch over the cave entrance

SUCCESS (Superb Health, rolled -2)

A Moment of Respite
Vael
Vael

Poppy shifts closer and settles beside Vael against the cold stone, letting her warmth press into his trembling shoulders. Her watch stays on the cave mouth, but her body makes a small shelter around him.

Vael

Vael

You do not have to keep standing guard over me alone. I can feel how tired you are, too.

Vael leans into her, careful at first, then with the wary trust of someone too spent to hide it. His breathing eases a fraction, though his hands still shake.

Poppy

Poppy

The cave mouth is clear, for now.

Vael

Vael

Back there, on the altar, I thought I had become only a weapon again. When you broke it, I could finally hear myself think.

The confession lands softly between them, warmer than the cave air. Dust sifts from the ceiling in a thin trickle, and Poppy holds steady as if that small crumble can be ignored.

Vael

Vael

Stay a little longer, Poppy. If you do not mind.

He says it quietly, and his head rests more fully against her for a moment. In the hush, the mountain keeps its distance, and the dark beyond the mouth remains only dark.

I curl up against him and tell him im not going anywhere

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled -2)

A Moment of Respite
Vael
Vael

Poppy folds down tighter against Vael, shoulder to shoulder, and stays there. The cold stone takes some of the weight, but not the trembling. Her arm settles more firmly around him, a small, stubborn anchor in the dark.

Poppy

Poppy

I am not going anywhere.

The words land plain and true. Vael draws in a slow breath, and the shake in his hands eases by a fraction. A few grains of dust slip from above and speckle Poppy’s sleeve.

Vael

Vael

Good. I would rather not be alone with my own thoughts just yet.

He gives a thin, tired huff that might be a laugh if he had more strength. His fingers uncurl against his chest, and he lets his head rest against her for real this time.

Vael

Vael

You pulled me back from it. From the altar, from the command, from myself.

Poppy’s rush of heat against the cave chill helps, but her arm stings where stone scrapes skin. Vael notices anyway, his gaze dropping to the fresh mark before lifting to her face.

Vael

Vael

Stay. I will try to rest properly, if you keep that promise.

I promise I'll stay. Now rest so you can get your strength back

Poppy

I’ll stay. Rest now, and get your strength back.

Vael’s shoulders loosen at once. He closes his eyes for a moment, breathing steadier now that the words are spoken, and lets the cave take the silence around them.

Vael

Vael

Then I will trust you with the watch, just for a while.

I keep watch while Vael sleeps

SUCCESS (Good Perception, rolled +0)

Poppy settles into stillness beside Vael and lets the cave go quiet around them. Her eyes trace the mouth of the cavern, the slanted stones, the drift of dust in the dim.

Poppy

Poppy

The entrance is clear. The floor is open. Nothing moves.

Vael’s breathing evens out in slow, careful pulls. His head rests back against the wall, and the tension in his hands loosens at last.

Vael

Vael

For once, there is no spell pulling at my bones.

Poppy keeps watch while he sleeps, shifting only when loose grit slides under her boot. The cave answers with silence, and the darkness stays at the threshold.

After a while, Vael stirs, not in alarm but in fatigue, and opens one eye toward her.

Vael

Vael

If you see trouble, wake me. If you do not, let me have this peace a little longer.

I keep watch until Vael wakes

SUCCESS (Good Perception, rolled +0)

Poppy stays where she is and lets her gaze do the work. The cave mouth sits open and empty, and the dim beyond does not change.

Vael’s eyelids lift a little farther. His breathing is still slow, but steadier now, as if the worst of the strain is loosening from him.

Vael

Vael

You kept watch.

Poppy

Poppy

The cave stays clear.

Poppy shifts her weight, never turning her back on the entrance. Dust drifts in thin pale lines through the dark, and the silence settles softer than before.

Vael

Vael

I heard none of it while I slept. No voices. No boots. No spellwork clawing at the walls.

Vael pushes one hand against the stone and gets his shoulders under him. He winces, then eases out a breath and lets the wall take his weight again.

Vael

Vael

Give me another moment, and I think I can stand without borrowing the mountain.

I keep watch a little longer

SUCCESS (Good Perception, rolled +0)

A Moment of Respite
Vael
Vael

Poppy keeps still at the cave mouth, and the dark beyond answers with nothing but thin drifting dust. The silence holds, clear and empty.

Inside the cave, Vael draws a longer breath. His shoulders loosen against the stone, and the tremor in his hands fades to a faint unsteadiness.

Vael

Vael

My legs will answer me again soon.

Poppy’s watch finds only the mountain: a broken seam of rock, loose chips on the floor, and the cave mouth standing open to the night.

Vael

Vael

That is better. I can feel the strength returning, slowly.

Vael shifts one hand off the wall and sits a little straighter, testing himself without forcing it. The relief in his face settles into something calmer, almost grateful.

Poppy’s guard does not need to chase anything now. The cave stays safe, and Vael is no longer fighting the ground just to remain upright.
