Vael’s wings crash open in the cave mouth, throwing a storm of shadow over the shale-strewn trail. The hunters on the bend hesitate as heat rolls out around him.

Poppy, go now. Reach the shrine’s inner sanctum, find the chain, and break it.

Loose stone skitters under Poppy’s boots as she bursts past him into the darker bend. Ahead, the ember glow stains the rock in a thin, wavering line.

Stop her. The dragon falls here.

Vael answers with a roar that shakes dust from the ceiling. A flare of gold-white fire sears the air between the trail and the pursuers, forcing them back from the narrowing path.

Poppy sees it clearly now, the shrine lies just beyond the next dark turn, and the chain must be inside it. Vael holds the hunters at the bend while she races for the sanctum.

Poppy drives up the shale, boots biting hard, and the dark bend spits her into a narrow chamber lit by ember-veins in the stone. The air changes at once, warmer, older.

She skids to a stop at the shrine’s inner sanctum, shoulder brushing a carved arch. The climb is done, but a sharp stone kisses her shin and leaves a hot sting.

Ahead, the chamber opens around a split altar and a broken-ring pedestal, its runes dim and watching. Dust hangs in the air like breath held too long.

I am here.

Behind her, Vael’s fire thunders and fades into the mouth of the passage, held at the bend like a living wall. The hunters do not cross.

Dragon! Hold the mouth!

Poppy stands alone in the sanctum now, with the shrine before her and the hunters' voices sealing the way back.
