The gate gives with a long groan, opening onto soot-black mud, iron offcuts, and dying embers. Ahead, the forge hammers with a steady clang, and a shape moves in the furnace glow.

Poppy steps through first, low and alert. Vael comes in at her shoulder, blade bare, his gaze cutting from scrap piles to the dark eaves.

A loose plank snaps somewhere beyond the smithy. The shape inside the forge vanishes from the orange light, and a second shadow slips along the far wall.

We are not alone.

The stamped paper on the hedge flutters free in the wind and skates into the yard, landing beside a trail of fresh prints that angle straight toward the forge door.

Vael

Cinder-Caller Veyr is inside, or someone wants it to look that way.

Vael shifts to guard the open yard while the forge door hangs half-lit ahead, the clearest path toward the broker behind the hunters.

I ask Vael how i can help

Poppy

Poppy

How can I help?

Vael

Vael

By staying light on your feet, and by watching what I miss.

Vael

Vael

I have a habit of trusting doors too quickly.

He glances toward the forge door, then back to Poppy. The blade in his hand lowers a fraction, not from ease, but from choosing words over steel.

Vael

Vael

If the one inside is Veyr, we need proof. If it is a trap, we need to know who set it.

Vael nudges the stamped paper with his boot. Its seal catches the furnace glow, clear as a breadcrumb in mud.

Vael

Vael

You saw the prints at the gate. I want your eyes on the yard while I take the door.

I circle wide and keep to the shadows

Poppy slips away from Vael and takes the yard by its dark edge, where soot clings to the walls and the moonlight thins under the eaves.

She skirts a stack of split kindling and frozen puddles, keeping low enough that the forge glow never catches her full shape.

From the shadows, she studies the yard. The overlapping bootprints at the gate point inward, then break apart near the forge wall.

The prints split by the ash barrel.

A shape shifts behind the half-open forge door, and the stamped paper in the mud flashes once as the door breathes warm light across it.

Vael reaches the threshold, blade angled low, while Poppy now has the yard in view from the blind side.

Vael

Vael

I’m going in. If you see movement, call it out fast.

I keep to the shadows and watch the forge door

Poppy holds to the soot-dark edge, and the forge door gives her a narrow, breathing slice of light.

Inside that gap, she catches a figure shifting back from the hearth, one hand snapping a hanging chain aside.

Poppy

Someone is in there.

The stamped paper in the mud stirs under the door’s warm draft, then sticks to Poppy’s boot.

Vael edges closer to the threshold, and the forge light catches the metal in his grip.

From within, a soft scrape answers them, and the half-open door shifts wider by a finger’s breadth.

Vael

Vael

There. Move if you have to, Poppy.

I slip closer to the forge door

Poppy glides from the wall and takes the forge door at a sharper angle, her boots finding the packed mud without a sound. The warm spill from inside widens over her hand and cheek as she reaches the threshold.

The stamped paper slips free from under her boot and skates into the light, its seal flashing once on the ground between her and the door.

Inside, the hidden figure freezes. A gloved hand lifts, not to strike, but to shield a lit lantern from the sightline.

Vael

Vael

He is boxed in if he stays there.

Poppy’s quiet advance puts her at the hinge-side gap, where the doorway itself now traps the movement within. The forge’s heat breathes out over her knuckles, and the gap no longer feels like cover.

From the dark just past the hearth, a low scrape of iron answers, and the light inside turns red at the edges.

Vael

Vael

There, Poppy. They cannot slip past you now.
