Poppy steps out with Vael and The Wary Patron into the wet night. The inn’s heat falls away behind them, replaced by cold air, slick mud, and the long, dark road curling toward the village edge.
Ahead, a forge glows at the far end of the lane, its orange mouth pulsing through the trees. The hammering keeps time with the silence, steady and distant, like a summons.

The Wary Patron
There. That road leads to Cinder-Caller Veyr’s workyard. I have said all I can, and I mean to say no more.

Vael
Good. You have done enough to point the way.
Vael glances at the stamped slip, then toward the forge light. He shifts his stance, ready to move, while the patron lingers at the threshold as if afraid to cross the mud.

Vael
Poppy, if the trail is honest, it ends there. If it is not, we learn who forged the lie.

stamped paper slip
“I eagerly grab Vael's hand and step into the mud to start running toward the forge's glow.”
SUCCESS (Superb Athletics, rolled +1)

Poppy catches Vael’s hand and pulls him off the road in one smooth surge. Mud splashes high as they break into a run, the forge glow swelling ahead of them.

Vael
Quick hands. Good. She moves like she means it.
The Wary Patron stays back at the inn door, shrinking into the dark while the pair race past the village edge.
Ahead, the lane bends under bare branches. The forge light now spills across a rutted yard gate, and a fresh trail of bootprints cuts through the mud toward it.

Poppy
Those prints are fresh.
Vael tightens his grip and angles toward the tracks, the stamped slip flashing once in his other hand.

Vael
There. Someone was here not long ago. And they did not come alone.
“I follow the fresh bootprints to the gate”
SUCCESS (Great Survival, rolled +3)

Poppy slows at the gate and studies the mud. The freshest prints cut in clean and deep, then splay once where someone turned hard toward the yard.

Poppy
The turn is recent.
She follows the tracks to the gatepost, where a second set overlaps the first, lighter boots stepping in from the verge, not the road.
A strip of stamped paper clings to the thorn hedge, bent by rain, its seal catching the forge light for one sharp blink.

Vael
There. That seal was used tonight.
Poppy reaches the gate and finds the latch already unbarred, the yard beyond open to anyone bold enough to walk in.

Vael
And we are not alone on this road.
