Smoke claws at Poppy as the sanctum groans behind her. The fire wall is gone, the passage mouth yawns empty, and ash sifts down from the cracking ceiling.
She bursts into the tunnel and nearly slips on scorched grit. In the dim behind her, the altar seam flashes pale once, then dies under a fresh rumble.
The shrine is failing. Whatever bound the hunters here is breaking apart with it, and Poppy can feel the whole place starting to give way.

The Lead Hunter
Poppy! You have not won anything. The chain is broken, but the hunt is not!
His voice fades in the smoke, far behind the collapsing stone. Ahead, the tunnel bends toward daylight, and a broken spear lies abandoned in the ash like a final, useless warning.
Poppy has one clear path now, get out before the shrine buries its secrets, then find Vael before the hunters regroup.

Find Vael
“I sprint toward the daylight, ignoring the falling stone to reach the exit.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Athletics, rolled -1)

Poppy drives uphill through the tunnel, boots hammering ash as stone chips rake past her shoulders. The daylight ahead widens from a slit to a pale mouth, and the shrine shudders hard enough to spit dust from every seam.
A slab breaks free behind her with a thunderous crack. She keeps running, and the falling stone misses by a breath, burying the passage she just crossed.
She bursts out onto the open ledge, smoke trailing from the tunnel behind her. Cold mountain air hits her face, sharp and clean against the furnace stink of the sanctum.
Below the ledge, the ravine drops into mist. The amber glow on the far landing still burns faintly through the haze, but the shrine behind Poppy groans like a wounded beast.
A shout scrapes out of the smoke from inside, then cuts off under another rumble. No sign of Vael breaks through the dust, only the dark mouth of the tunnel and the slipping rain of grit.

Poppy
He is not here.
The ledge trembles under Poppy's feet as fractured stone starts to spill from the entrance. Somewhere in the chaos, the hunters are still moving, and the way back into the shrine is already folding shut.

“I shout out for Vael as loud as i can”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +0)

Poppy cups her hands and shouts Vael’s name into the shaking air.
The mountain answers first, with a hard crack of stone and a scatter of dust from the collapsed shrine mouth.
Then, faint but unmistakable, a raspy reply drifts up from below the ledge, swallowed and thrown back by the mist.
A long, dark shape jerks into view in the ravine haze, clinging to a broken shelf of rock beneath the ledge.

Vael
Poppy... here.
Vael drags himself higher, one clawed hand hooked in the stone, smoke and grit streaking his face as he looks up at her.
Behind him, the ravine mist stirs with moving lantern-glow, and the shattered shrine continues to shed stone behind Poppy.

New Gift: Vael's Trusted Ally
“I reach down and pull Vael up from the ledge and into a tight hug”
SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled -1)

Poppy braces one boot against the ledge, hooks both hands under Vael’s arm, and hauls. Stone grinds, ash spills, and he comes up in a hard pull that drags them chest to chest on the ledge.
She catches him before he can slip, and the impact folds the breath out of both of them.

Vael
You found me.
Vael’s forehead drops briefly to her shoulder. His hand clenches at her back, not to hold on to the ledge, but to her.

Vael
I thought I had lost you in the smoke.
Below them, lantern-glow wavers in the ravine mist, distant and uncertain, while the shrine behind them sheds another hiss of rubble.

Vael
Are you hurt?

Get Vael to safety
“Im not hurt. Are you?”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled -1)

Poppy
I’m not hurt. Are you?
Vael’s answer catches in his chest before it becomes a full reply. He studies her face, then lifts one wing-crease of a smile that does not quite hide the strain in his posture.

Vael
Bruised, perhaps. Stubborn. Nothing broken that I can name.
He shifts back a hand from her shoulder to his own ribs, testing them with a careful wince. Ash slides off the ledge beside them in a gray ribbon.

Vael
You pulled me up in time. That matters more than pride.
The ravine wind tugs at his torn sleeve, and the glow below the ledge dims as the collapsing shrine coughs one last shower of stone.

Vael
Stay with me a moment, Poppy. If the hunters are still below, I would rather face them with you at my side.
“Im not going anywhere, big guy. You're stuck with me until one of us dies.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +1)

Poppy
I’m not going anywhere, big guy. You’re stuck with me until one of us dies.

Vael
A terrible oath, and a welcome one.

Vael
His shoulders loosen a fraction, as if the words let him set down a burden he had been carrying alone.
Vael turns fully toward her, one hand sliding from his ribs to the stone for balance. The ash keeps drifting behind them, but his attention stays on Poppy now.

Vael
Then I accept the burden. I do not want to be chased alone again.
He gives a small, tired huff that almost becomes a laugh, and the expression reaches his eyes at last. Below the ledge, the ravine light shivers on the mist, distant and weak.

Vael
Stay near. I can still walk, but I would rather not prove it to the cliff.
“I look for a safer path down”
SUCCESS (Great Perception, rolled +0)

Poppy shifts to the ledge edge and looks down instead of back. The ravine wall is broken by a narrow shelf line, half-hidden by mist, with old boot scrapes and a safer drop below the loose stone.

Poppy
There. A usable way down.
She tests the first hold, then the next, finding the slope steadier than it looks. The ash keeps falling past her boots as the broken shrine behind them groans and sheds dust.
Vael follows her gaze, then the path, and steps closer to the edge with careful relief. Below, the faint lantern-light wavers through the mist, but it is no longer blocking the way, only marking the dark.

Vael
That shelf will take us. Better than trusting the cliff to be kind.
Poppy edges onto the route first, and the rock holds. The descent opens cleanly into the ravine side, with a narrow landing below and a clear path away from the shrine.
Vael sets one hand on the stone, ready to follow, but both of them glance toward the smoke-choked shrine mouth as a fresh crack snaps through the ledge behind them.
“I keep close to Vael on the descent”
SUCCESS (Superb Agility, rolled +2)

Poppy stays tight to Vael as she steps down beside him, matching each careful placement with her own. The shelf path takes them under the broken shrine mouth, where dust drifts over the ledge like gray snow.
Her hand brushes the stone near his shoulder, steadying them both as the cliff narrows. Vael keeps his body turned toward her, then toward the drop, leaving no space between them for the wind to pry open.

Vael
Good. Stay with me.
They reach a lower lip of rock together, and the path widens into a cramped landing above the mist. Behind them, the ledge crack spits a sharp line of grit and the shrine groans once more.
Below, the amber glow on the ravine shelf flickers through the fog, now far underfoot instead of ahead. Vael glances down at the safe footing, then back to Poppy with visible relief.

Vael
That was the last bad step. I am with you.
A new scrape answers from above, faint but distinct, as if someone or something is moving along the ruined rim behind the shrine. The path forward is open, but the sound from the heights makes them both pause.
