Adventure of Bob 1

The library wall bursts apart, and Bob is hurled into a glass conservatory. Cold moonlight spills over choking vines and blackened ferns. Wet soil and rot fill the air.

The Mourning Woman lands hard among the planters, one hand locked to her chest. The bound record in Bob’s hand smolders, its pages curling at the edges.

Something unseen thuds against the shattered doorway behind them. The moonlight trembles across the panes, and the nearest dead leaves stir as if breathed on from below.

The conservatory’s far end vanishes into shadow, where a door hangs half open among the damp greenery.

Bob lowers her shoulder and slips between a toppled planter and a curtain of wet vines, moving with careful speed instead of panic.

The broken glass above her ticks softly as the conservatory shudders. Behind her, the doorway groans under another impact.

Bob reaches the half open door. The wood is cold, swollen with damp, and marked with a dark, hand-sized stain near the latch.

From beyond the frame, a breath slides through the crack, carrying the smell of grave soil and something old enough to be forgotten.

Bob leans in close, keeping one hand on the doorframe as the other hovers near the latch. The stain is not wet. It is deeper than wet, sunk into the grain like a bruise.

Her gaze catches a hairline scratch under the latch plate, fresh enough to gleam in the dim light. Something has worried it from the outside, as if testing the lock with a narrow nail or hook.

Bob studies the seam again. The latch sits crooked by a fraction, and the strike plate is bent inward, not outward. The door was closed against something that pushed from the other side, then caught and held.

A cold pulse thuds through the wood. The stain near the latch spreads a little, not in liquid, but in shadow, and the breath beyond the crack stops all at once.

The latch twitches under Bob's fingertips, as if something on the far side has just found the exact pressure point to open it.

Bob shoves the conservatory door, but it catches halfway on the bent strike plate with a shriek of metal. The latch drags against something dark on the outside, like tar that has learned to grasp.

The panel judders in her hands. Cold air knifes through the gap, carrying wet earth and a whispering rush that sounds almost like breathing.

A black stain seeps wider around the latch, pulsing once, then pressing back. The door bows inward against Bob's grip.

Something on the other side scratches once, slow and deliberate. The latch gives a wet metallic click, and the door starts to open toward Bob.

Bob lets go of the door and slips back just as it yawns wider. The black pressure surges into the gap, missing her by inches.

She snaps a tarot card free from the deck. The paper catches the conservatory light, then goes still in her fingers.

A cold draft coils through the conservatory. The door behind Bob trembles, then slams partway back, as if something unseen has struck it from the outside.

Bob lifts the card toward the trembling light. The inked figure of the Page seems to lean forward, as if listening.

The black stain on the door hardware flinches, then crawls back a finger's width. The pressure on the latch stutters.

A thin seam of pale light opens in the dark stain, like a slit eye forced awake. The door shudders, but it does not swing wider.

Bob feels the card warm in her hand, not with heat, but with attention. Somewhere beyond the glass, something pauses, listening to the Page of Wands and waiting for the next pull on the line.

Bob lowers the card a fraction and opens her hand, offering the Page toward the seam of light.

The slit in the stain widens as if it recognizes an old name. The latch stills.

A breath moves through the door, colder this time, but the pressure changes. It is no longer forcing entry. It is waiting.

Bob sets the card against the seam. The pale light catches on the ink, and the black stain recoils like a hand from a flame.

The door stops trembling. From beyond it comes one soft, deliberate knock, as if something has accepted the terms and is asking to be let through anyway.
