The service door hangs open beyond the collapsing aisles. Inside, chains suspend ledgers from the ceiling, each cover twitching as though breathing. One fresh volume bears Bob's name beside the word WITNESS.

The Caretaker
Do not let the records name anyone else. That is how the Archives make a person permanent.
The Keeper of Records waits behind the threshold, one hand resting on a chained index. His furious gaze moves from Bob to The Caretaker, then to the blank ledgers hanging behind them.

The Keeper of Records
The original witness index is here. Read it, and you will learn who opened your entry. Refuse, and the Archives will complete it with the nearest living names.
The chained ledgers open together. Their pages show fragments of Bob's crossings, then turn toward The Caretaker and leave long, empty spaces beneath his name. The ink is waiting for a final designation.

The Caretaker
It is not recording what happened. It is deciding what we are.

Secure a usable route away from the Archives' claim
“Tell the ledgers a story”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled -1)

Bob
Once, the Archives opened a mouth and called itself a witness. Bob crossed its darkness, carried its debt, and returned with the name it feared.
The ledgers listen. Then the blank pages fill with a single continuous account, stitching Bob's crossings into a story rather than a verdict.

The Caretaker
Keep speaking. Give them an ending they cannot write for you.
The fresh volume bearing Bob's name closes without a snap. Its cover turns toward a narrow stair drawn in black ink, descending behind the chained index. The route is real, and the air along it smells of dust, wax, and rain.

The Keeper of Records
You have made a passage. But the index has heard the condition.
A final line appears beneath Bob's account: WITNESS MAY PASS ONLY TOWARD THE SOURCE. Every other stair in the annex fades into blank paper. Behind The Caretaker, fresh pages open and wait beneath his name.

The Keeper of Records
Take the sourceward stair, and the Archives will guide you. Turn elsewhere, and they will record you as having chosen to remain.
✓ Quest Accepted
Enter the sourceward stair
“I descend the sourceward stair, keeping my name and story close, and tell the caretaker to follow me.”
SUCCESS (Superb Agility, rolled -1)

Bob
Caretaker, follow me.
Bob steps onto the black-ink stair. The script firms beneath her feet, bearing her weight without smearing her name or the account bound to it.

The Caretaker
I am behind you. Do not let the Archives place my name ahead of yours.
She descends with measured speed, keeping the fresh volume and its written story close. The annex recedes above, its chains ticking softly in the dark.
The Caretaker follows onto the stair. Behind him, blank pages continue opening beneath his name, but none can reach across the narrowing threshold.
Below, the stair ends at a landing where a dull pulse beats through the stone. Dust, wax, and rain rise from the darkness ahead, marking the sourceward way.
