Bob pushes into the library last, and the heavy oak doors slam shut behind her. Dust hangs in the lamplight. Shelves climb into shadow, and the air reeks of ozone and rotting paper.

The Paranormal Investigator
Hold it there. If the threshold follows us, I need a fresh line now.
The Paranormal Investigator drops to one knee at the door, chalk scraping fast across the warped wood and floorboards. The glowing circle in the study behind them is gone from view. Here, the silence feels older.

The Mourning Woman
It is in the house still. I can feel it moving.

The Medium
The binding is thinning, not broken.
A brittle cough sounds from deeper in the library. One of the high bookcases trembles, and a loose volume slips free, hitting the floor with a wet thud.

The Caretaker
New rooms do not make old debts vanish.
From the aisle beyond the shelves, a pale hand drags across the wallpaper, searching for purchase as the chalk line begins to glow.

Survive the library
“Draw a card”
SUCCESS (Good Investigation, rolled +2)
Bob draws a card from the tarot deck. The room seems to tighten around the motion, as if the library itself is waiting to see what turns up.

Bob
A face with a ringed eye, and a tower behind it. The ink on the card looks freshly wet.
The card is The Moon. Its silver surface catches the threshold glow, and the light crawls across the printed path like something alive.

The Medium
Do you feel that. It is answering you.

The Paranormal Investigator
Keep it steady. If it marks the binding, I need to know where the break is.
The card darkens in Bob's hand. Beneath the image, a second shape rises, thin as a stain, pointing toward the trembling aisle beyond the shelves.

The Mourning Woman
It is here. I can hear it in the pages.

The Caretaker
Read it, then. Tell us what has been hidden.
From the bookcase, the pale hand presses harder through the wallpaper, and the glowing chalk line on the floor shivers as if something on the far side has just learned Bob's name.

Decipher the message from the library

“Find the book”
SUCCESS (Good Investigation, rolled +2)
Bob lowers the tarot card and scans the trembling aisle. The shelves seem to tilt toward her gaze, as if hiding something ashamed.

Bob
The shiver is strongest by the eastern stack.
She slips past a row of sagging folios, following the cold pulse beneath the floorboards. A book with no dust on its spine sits wrong among the rest, angled outward like it has been waiting.
Bob pulls it free. The title is half-erased, but the binding mark matches the glow on the threshold seal.

The Medium
There. That is the one it was using.

The Paranormal Investigator
Careful, do not open it yet. If the seal and the book are linked, we may have found the breach point.
The page edges twitch in her hands. From the wallpaper, the pale hand bulges farther out, fingers spreading as if it can smell the book.

The Mourning Woman
Please, Bob, do not let it take that back.

The Caretaker
At last. Read the hidden line, and we will know what answers this place still owes.
+ New Item Acquired
Ominous book

“Read the book”
SUCCESS (Good Occult Lore, rolled +2)

Bob opens the book. The pages stiffen, then turn on their own, fast as a nervous hand riffling evidence.
Ink crawls up from the paper in a ring of wet black script, not words at first, then a name, then a warning repeated until it blurs.

Bob
It is a binding record. The hidden line is the hinge.

The Medium
Read it aloud, but do not finish the final phrase.

The Paranormal Investigator
If you have the missing text, say it now. The seal is slipping.
Bob traces the line with one finger. The letters flare cold, and the pale hand in the wallpaper jerks back as if struck.
A sentence surfaces between the stains, naming the Mourning Woman as the ward, and the eastern shelf as the lock. The final clause is torn out, leaving a hungry gap that seems to listen.

The Mourning Woman
No. That is not mine to keep.
The chalk circle brightens hard enough to cast shadows under the table. From the wall, something answers in a voice like paper dragged across teeth, and the missing phrase waits for Bob to speak or withhold.
