Bob and the others spill through the widening seam as the library floor buckles behind them. Cold air knifes up from below, wet paper stench following it into the dark.
They land in the Deep Archives, a tunnel of black shelves and damp stone. Somewhere in the walls, thousands of pages turn at once, whispering like a crowd that never breathes.

The Mourning Woman
Bob... do not let go.
The Mourning Woman clings to Bob’s coat as the Warden Key throws a thin, trembling light across endless aisles. The shadows between the shelves look stacked, not empty.

Brother Anselm
Keep moving. The Archives are listening now.
Ahead, a narrow aisle opens on a stone desk. On it rests an iron-bound ledger, swollen with black mold, its cover faintly breathing.

Examine the iron-bound ledger
“Examine the ledger”
SUCCESS (Great Investigation, rolled +1)

Bob steps to the stone desk and studies the ledger. The mold is not just growth, it forms careful bands, like old hands trying to bind the book shut.

Bob
The cover is breathing. So is the mold.
Her fingers find the clasp. It gives with a soft, wet click, and a draft sighs out of the pages, carrying the smell of graves and ink.

The Mourning Woman
Bob, what does it say?
The first page is a catalog of names, crossed out one by one, then rewritten beneath in a hand that grows more frantic with each line. Several entries are fresh.

Brother Anselm
Those names are recent. Too recent.
At the center, one phrase has been pressed so hard the paper dents around it, as if the writer feared the words would escape.
The ink forms itself into a warning, then the desk trembles. Deep in the aisles, something answers with a slow, deliberate scrape.
