Adventure of Bob 1

The Caretaker scrubs the last smear of black residue from the floorboards, salt-stained cloth moving in hard, exact circles. Bob hits the library floor behind him, the shut seam hissing like a fresh cut.

He keeps his head bowed, one hand braced on the boards, as the remaining pages whirl above them. The room shudders, and the front seam recoils with a wet, papery snap.

He drags the cloth over the broken circle again, wiping faster now. Somewhere deeper in the shelves, a second seam begins to breathe open, narrow and dark.

Bob pushes up from the boards and slips into the shelves' shadow. The air tastes of damp ink and old iron.

Her fingers brush a spine that should be dry, but the leather comes away slick with black residue. It smears into a thin line, pointing inward.

Between two rows, she finds a book wedged backward, its cover pulsing once like a trapped pulse.

Bob pulls it free. The title surface is blank, but the inside page is crowded with fresh script, naming the second seam as a mouth.

The warning lands too late. The nearest shelves answer with a wet, papery rustle, and the new seam in the dark opens wide enough to show moving text inside.

Bob steadies the pulsing book against her palm and gives the fresh script a voice.

The words leave her lips like spilled ink. Every shelf in the aisle turns a fraction toward her.

The moving darkness folds inward, not toward Bob, but around the spoken phrase. Text streams across its depth, arranging itself into a single repeated word: WITNESS.

The black residue on Bob's fingers dries to a brittle film. The seam withdraws one shelf-length, leaving her standing clear of its reach.

Behind the Caretaker, books slide from their places and fall open on the floor. Each page bears the same blank space, waiting for a name.

Identify who Bob brought into the archives
