Candlelight wavers across a cramped study, wax on every shelf, every book spine, every trembling pane. Bob stands at the threshold, tarot deck in one hand, staff in the other, while a chalk ring burns pale on the floorboards.
Inside the ring, the Medium kneels rigidly, lips moving too fast to catch. At the door, the Paranormal Investigator presses one palm to the frame, as if the wood itself might keep something out.

The Medium
Do not let it hear the name slip away. It is waiting for that.

The Paranormal Investigator
Bob, if you know any binding work, now is the time. The threshold is failing.
A draft crawls through the study, though every window is shut. The candles nearest the door gutter low, then flare, as if something unseen leans in to listen.

The Medium
I can feel it clawing at the edge of memory. If the true name goes, we lose the last chain on it.
From the dark beyond the threshold comes a soft scratch, patient and deliberate, like a fingertip testing the door from the other side.

The Paranormal Investigator
Choose quickly. Hold the line, or help me speak the name before it is gone.

“Speak the name.”
SUCCESS (Good Occult Lore, rolled +1)

Bob
Veyrath.
The word hits the room like a hammer on glass. The candles snap upright, their flames thinning to clean blue points.

The Medium
Yes. Yes, that is it.
The chalk ring answers with a faint, white shimmer. For one breath, the floorboards around it look scorched from the inside.

The Paranormal Investigator
Again, Bob. Keep it pinned.
Something at the door recoils. The scratch stops. Then the study darkens at the edges, as if a sleeve of black water is pressing over the windows.

The Medium
It heard you. It knows the shape of it now.
The threshold trembles. The lock begins to rattle from the wrong side, once, twice, then a slow, hungry pull that strains the wood.
