Glass bursts inward. A woman in torn mourning black slams onto the study floor, choking on dust and shattered glitter. The chalk circle flares, and the air turns knife-cold.

The Medium
No... that face. I know her.

The Paranormal Investigator
Bob, do not let her cross the line.

The Mourning Woman
It is already here. Not at the door, inside the house. Inside us.
She lifts one shaking finger at the threshold, then smiles through the gasp, too wide, too calm. The candle flames bend toward her as if listening.

The Mourning Woman
Veyrath hungers. Open the circle, and I will spare the one still breathing.

The Paranormal Investigator
She is bait, or worse. Move, Bob.
+ Scene Quest Added
Survive the Mourning Woman's intrusion
“Use the staff”
FAILURE (Great Willpower, rolled +1)

Bob plants the staff and drives its tip toward the threshold. The wood shudders, then goes dead heavy in her hands.
A cold pulse answers from the doorway. The chalk at the edge of the circle blisters dark, and the dust in the room whips straight at Bob's face.

The Medium
The binding is slipping... no, not slipping, being pulled.

The Mourning Woman
Give it the staff. Give it the way in.
The staff jerks sideways in Bob's grip as if seized by an invisible hand. The candlelight gutters blue, and for a heartbeat the study fills with the smell of wet earth from a grave.

The Paranormal Investigator
Bob, hold the line. Do not let her touch the circle.
The Mourning Woman takes one gliding step closer without crossing the chalk. Her shadow reaches over the line first, long and wrong, and the shattered window rattles under a knock from the other side.
“Hold the line”
SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +2)

Bob plants her boots and tightens her grip on the staff. The invisible drag on it eases, then stops cold, as if meeting a wall she refuses to yield.

The Medium
It is holding. Keep it holding.
The chalk circle flares pale, thin as a knife edge. Dust that had been racing for the threshold stalls midair and begins to fall in a slow, uneasy drift.

The Paranormal Investigator
That is it, Bob, keep her out.

The Mourning Woman
You cannot keep the door shut forever.
Her shadow lunges again, but this time it strikes the circle and recoils. The blue candle flames bow away from her, then snap upright.

The Medium
Something on the other side just noticed the binding.
From the shattered window comes a second knock, harder now, splitting the wet silence of the study. The mourning woman turns her head toward it, and for one sharp moment her face looks frightened.
“Offer her help”
FAILURE (Fair Diplomacy, rolled -2)

Bob lowers the staff a fraction and opens her free hand toward the Mourning Woman, offering space instead of force.

The Mourning Woman
No. You do not understand what is at the door.
The answer comes like a cold draft. The woman jerks back, not from Bob, but from something pressing against her spine from the broken window.

The Medium
Do not let her cross. Bob, do not let her speak a name.
The chalk line gutters. A pale seam appears in the air beside the shattered frame, narrow at first, then widening as if a hidden door is being unlatched from the wrong side.

The Mourning Woman
Veyrath, no, wait...
Her mouth moves without sound. Black moisture beads at the window sill and runs upward, against gravity, toward the seam.

The Paranormal Investigator
Bob, move. It is opening through her.
The study darkens by a shade. The staff shivers in Bob’s hand as the thing beyond the window starts to push the edge of the room inward.
“Move back”
FAILURE (Great Agility, rolled +0)

Bob steps back, but the floor catches her foot on a split seam of old wood. Her heel skids, and her shoulder clips the edge of the desk.
The staff jerks sideways. The chalk circle flares, then breaks in one thin section near the window, as if something has breathed through it.

The Medium
Hold still. Do not give it room.
Black moisture climbs faster now, threading over the sill and into the crack in the air. The seam widens by a handspan.

The Paranormal Investigator
Bob, the threshold is taking shape. If it opens fully, we lose the room.

The Mourning Woman
It is already here. You are only choosing how much it takes.
Something unseen presses from the other side of the window. The shattered frame rattles hard enough to shed glass onto the carpet.
The Mourning Woman turns her head toward the seam, and her expression empties into raw alarm. From the gap comes one slow, answering knock.
“Close the threshold”
SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +4)

Bob plants the staff and drives it toward the seam. The air shudders, then tightens, as if the room is clenching its teeth.
The black moisture on the sill recoils in a twitching line. The crack in the air pinches smaller, dragging light back into the window frame.

The Medium
Yes, keep it shut, keep it shut.

The Paranormal Investigator
That is it, press it now. Seal the opening.
Something on the far side slams against the threshold. The impact hammers the study, but the seam holds, flexing instead of tearing.

The Mourning Woman
No. No, not like this.
Her voice frays at the edges. The shadow around her shoulders peels away and skitters across the floor like spilled ink.
The crack shrinks to a hairline. Then, from somewhere beyond it, comes a soft knock again, patient and close, as if something is still waiting for a hand to open the door.
