Valeria hauls herself up into the tighter passage above the service tunnels, dust stinging her eyes. The crawlspace opens just enough to show a terrified workman flattened against the wall.
A hooded man stands over him, knife held close without a wasted motion. He turns his face toward Valeria, not striking, only waiting.

The Hooded Stranger
Easy. If I meant you dead, you would still be on the ladder.

The Hooded Stranger
I served with your father. He was brave, and stupid enough to trust the wrong men. I know why your house was spared.

The Workman
Lady, please, I did nothing. He made me stay here. Please.
The hooded man presses the blade a finger closer to the workman’s throat, then tilts his head toward Valeria, claiming the cramped dark as if it belongs to him.

The Hooded Stranger
One moment of your time, Valeria Asiaticus. In exchange, I keep silent about what I know.
✓ Quest Accepted
Deal with the hooded stranger
“"My father always wore a gold signet ring with the picture of an animal. What animal was it?" This is a trick question; her father wore no rings.”
FAILURE (Good Reasoning, rolled +0)

Valeria Asiaticus
My father wore no ring. What animal was on the signet?
The hooded stranger does not answer at once. His knife hand stays steady, but his eyes flick to Valeria's face, then past her shoulder, as if measuring the crawlspace behind her.

The Hooded Stranger
No animal. That is the point. Your father never wore the ring in public.

The Hooded Stranger
He kept it hidden, and I saw it only once, under his palm, a wolf biting a laurel wreath.

The Workman
He knows her family. The man is not bluffing.
The workman swallows hard and shifts his weight, and in the cramped movement a loose stone scrapes free beside his heel. Beneath it, a blackened gap shows a narrow ledge branching away into darkness.

The Hooded Stranger
There. One way runs to the outer drains. The other dead-ends at a locked hatch I cannot open quietly. Choose, and we may both live long enough to regret it.
“"The drains sound like the safer choice."”
FAILURE (Good Reasoning, rolled -1)

Valeria Asiaticus
The drains sound like the safer choice.

The Hooded Stranger
Safer, yes. Cleaner, no. Once you crawl down there, the stench will cling to you for a week.
Valeria shifts her weight toward the branch, and the loose ledge gives a little under the dust. The workman recoils from the opening, but the stranger does not press the knife forward. He only glances at the dark, then at Valeria, as if waiting to see whether she notices the trap in his offer.

The Workman
I can take the drain path. I know the stones. I know where it breaks into the lower runs.
His voice cracks on the last word. A dull drip echoes from somewhere below, and for one breath the branching ledge seems to breathe with the tunnel. The stranger’s blade lowers another finger’s width, not in surrender, but in calculation.

The Hooded Stranger
Then choose quickly. If the hatch stays locked, the drains are the only way out before the patrol returns.
Valeria gets the answer she needs, but not the comfort. The drain route is real, and the workman knows a way through it. The choice now is uglier, because the stranger has made it plain he will follow whichever path she takes.
“"Let's go. I can always jump in the Tiber later."”
SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled +4)

Valeria Asiaticus
Let's go. I can always jump in the Tiber later.
Valeria commits at once. She plants a hand on the broken lip and drops into the drain route before either man can crowd her back. Her feet find slick stone, then a lower shelf of packed silt, and the darkness opens around her in a cold, wet breath.
The workman blinks at her sudden move, then scrambles after, tears cutting bright tracks through the grime. Above, the hooded stranger leans over the split floor instead of striking, watching her descent with a sharpened stillness.

The Hooded Stranger
Good. You can still choose the faster way out, if you keep your wits.
His knife hand stays low. With his free hand, he nudges a loose wedge of stone aside, exposing a second, narrower run beside the drain, dry enough to crawl and marked with old chisel cuts.

The Workman
That shaft goes under the service wall. It breaks into the lower channels. I swear it.
Valeria lands in the drain route cleanly, already in the tunnel's throat. The stranger remains above for one heartbeat longer, then lowers his blade and begins to follow, but the hidden side-run gives Valeria a clear, darker path ahead and a chance to lose him before the patrol returns.
Quest Complete
Find another way out of the service tunnels
Attribute Upgrade: Agility Great→Superb
“Valeria knows these tunnels better than the Praetorians, but she is outside the areas gladiators normally use. She feels she has no choice but to trust the workman.”
SUCCESS (Good Perception, rolled -1)

Valeria trusts the workman’s pointing hand instead of the stranger’s stare. She takes the dry side-run, shoulder first, and the narrow crawl swallows her from the wet drain. Behind her, the hooded man shifts in after her, but the passage turns tight enough that only one can advance at a time.

The Workman
This way, this way, keep low. The chisel marks mean a bend, not a wall.
His warning pays off. Valeria clears the bend and finds the hidden run breaking into a wider seam of masonry, where old runoff has worn a shallow groove toward darker air. The route is real, and it leads away from the patrol's noise.
But the climb scrapes her forearm raw against stone, and the rough edge tears a bright line through her sleeve. The sting is small, the risk is not.

The Hooded Stranger
You see? He serves you better alive than dead. Let me through, and I can still help you vanish.
The workman freezes at the sound of him, pale and wide-eyed in the gloom. Valeria now has the path the man promised, and the stranger close enough behind to make the next choice dangerous.
“"Follow me, then." She moves further down the passage.”
SUCCESS (Superb Agility, rolled -2)

Valeria answers with action instead of words, slipping deeper into the run while the stone narrows around her shoulders. The passage bends away from the split, and the hooded man is left behind the choke point.
The workman scrambles after her, half stumbling, half crawling, and a loose pebble skitters loudly down the slope. Somewhere back in the dark, the stranger hears it.

The Hooded Stranger
Careful. That sound carries.
Valeria reaches a lower shelf where the masonry drops into a wider pocket of air. Ahead, the side-run opens to a jut of broken stone, and beyond it the route seems to continue, but the safer branch lies farther in.

The Workman
There, that ledge. If you take it, you lose the gap behind you.
He says it too quickly, too loudly, and then clamps a hand over his own mouth. The hooded stranger does not appear, but his knife scrapes once against stone from the darkness behind them.
Valeria keeps moving, and the crawl finally changes shape under her feet, forcing the decision on her. The workman trails close, trembling, while the hidden way ahead waits for her next choice.
“The situation is hazardous and uncertain, but there seems no chance that the Praetorians will catch up with them anytime soon. She waits a moment for the hooded man to catch up.”
SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled -1)

Valeria stops at the lip of the wider pocket and lets the dark have a breath. The workman freezes beside her, staring into the passage behind them as if listening for a blade on stone.
A scrape answers from the shadows, then a footfall. Slow. Deliberate. The hooded stranger comes up to the broken ledge at last, knife lowered but not gone.

The Hooded Stranger
You wait for me. Good. That means you still want words before blood.

Valeria Asiaticus
Valeria says nothing, only keeps her gaze on him and makes the silence do the work.

The Hooded Stranger
Your father taught me to keep my face hidden when Rome looks too closely. He also taught me not to waste a warning. Messalina has eyes in the tunnels.
The workman swallows hard and edges back from both of them, caught between the fork in the crawlspace and the stranger’s knife hand. The broken ledge throws long black lines across the floor.

The Hooded Stranger
If you mean to walk on, choose quickly. If you mean to cut me down, do it cleanly. But if you mean to live, let me tell you what I know about the other path.
“"You talking to me? I know nothing about it, except that water runs downhill, so that is the way to the drains." She looks at the workman, so he if he has anything to add.”
SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +1)

Valeria Asiaticus
You talk like I owe you trust. I know only that water runs downhill, so the drains are the wiser way.
Valeria turns her head toward the workman instead of the knife, letting the stranger's claim hang unanswered in the dust.
The workman flinches at being looked at, then points a shaking finger toward the lower route and blurts out that the drain passage runs slick and steep, but it stays open if the grates are not chained.

The Hooded Stranger
He knows the way. Good. Then listen to him, or lose him in the dark.
Valeria’s attention stays on the workman until he nods, fast and desperate, and adds that the left path bends toward an outer outlet while the right ends at a locked hatch near the old runoff.

The Hooded Stranger
Choose the water, then. It will take you farther than pride ever does.
The workman swallows, then presses himself toward the drain opening as if hoping the words have already made him safer.
“"Very well, we go the left way and take our chances about the grate."”
SUCCESS (Superb Agility, rolled +1)

Valeria slips first, low and sure, into the left drain passage. The workman stumbles after her, and the hooded stranger follows with his knife still out, but the route begins to steal the light from him.

The Hooded Stranger
Keep moving. If the grate is chained, we turn back only in death.
The tunnel narrows hard, then opens under a sagging stone lip. Ahead, black water glints faintly where the outlet drops toward the outer drains.

Valeria Asiaticus
The left way is real. The hatch is behind us.
Valeria reaches the lip before either man can lag her. Below, the channel runs clean enough to take her weight, but the passage is already slick with seepage and old slime.
The workman recoils at the edge, then swallows his fear and clambers after her, boots skidding once before he catches himself on the stone.

The Hooded Stranger
There. You have your water. Now decide whether I walk beside you or vanish behind you.
“She looks at him innocently. "You choose. But put away the stupid knife unless you mean to use it."”
SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled -1)

Valeria Asiaticus
You choose. But put away the stupid knife unless you mean to use it.
Valeria keeps her face mild, almost innocent, as the words land in the cramped dark. The hooded stranger stops with one boot on the slick stone, reading her tone as much as her eyes.

The Hooded Stranger
You speak like your father. I remember that more than the blade.
His knife lowers. Not gone, but no longer hunting for her throat. The workman exhales too loudly, then clamps both hands over his mouth at once.

The Hooded Stranger
It stays sheathed if you stay honest. I knew your house before it fell quiet, and I did not come to sell you to the highest bidder.

Valeria Asiaticus
The knife is down.
The hooded man eases one step back into the water-glossed shadow, giving her space at the lip. The workman edges sideways, glancing between them, while the drain mutters coldly below.

The Hooded Stranger
Then talk to me, Valeria Asiaticus, before the dark decides for us.
“"It seems like an odd time for conversation. What do you wish to discuss?"”
SUCCESS (Fair Politics, rolled +1)

Valeria Asiaticus
It seems like an odd time for conversation. What do you wish to discuss?

The Hooded Stranger
You. Your father. The things your house buried, and the people who still remember them.

The Hooded Stranger
He studies her face in the dimness, then glances past her toward the workman, measuring how much fear still sits in the tunnel.
The stranger shifts his grip and reaches into his cloak, not for steel this time, but for a small waxed token. He lets it catch the faint shine from the water below.

The Hooded Stranger
This was your father’s sign. I carried it when men with better cloaks than mine still pretended Rome was honest.
The workman stares at the token, then at Valeria, as if the tunnel itself has narrowed around the truth. Somewhere behind them, water ticks against stone, patient and cold.

The Hooded Stranger
I did not come to name you to your enemies. I came to ask whether you want to hear what Messalina’s people are doing in the dark.
“"I thought they were chasing after me. You have a different theory?"”
SUCCESS (Good Reasoning, rolled +1)

Valeria Asiaticus
I thought they were chasing after me. You have a different theory?

The Hooded Stranger
I think they are chasing a story, and you are only the shape it takes when they say your name aloud.

The Hooded Stranger
Messalina’s people are not hunting the girl in armor. They want the house, the debt, the names that still answer to it.

The Workman
He sounds too calm for a man with a knife at his belt.

The Hooded Stranger
Your father knew that kind of hunt. So did I. That is why I am still standing here instead of selling your face to the highest bidder.
He lowers the token toward the water, then closes his fingers around it again, as if weighing trust against silence.

The Hooded Stranger
If I speak plainly, you hear me to the end. If not, I walk away and you keep guessing which of them has already found your trail.
“Valeria fakes a bored yawn. "Such a lovely day! What better way to spend it than a little chat with friends?"”
SUCCESS (Fair Oratory, rolled +0)

Valeria answers with a lazy yawn that barely hides the edge in her mouth. The sound dies in the damp tunnel.

Valeria Asiaticus
Such a lovely day. What better way to spend it than a little chat with friends?

The Hooded Stranger
Friends would ask for the truth sooner. You ask for style.
A beat passes. The stranger’s mouth twitches, not quite a smile, while the token clicks softly against his thumb. The workman swallows hard and does not move.

The Hooded Stranger
Messalina can buy guards. She can buy ears. She cannot easily buy a woman who remembers your father owed her nothing.

The Hooded Stranger
I watched him refuse a better offer than mine, once. He laughed at it. Then he made me promise to stay alive.
His hand opens at last, and the waxed token hangs between them, slick with tunnel moisture. Somewhere beyond the bend, water ticks against stone.

The Hooded Stranger
Take the sign if you mean to hear me out. Or tell me to go, and I will leave you with only one name to fear.
“She takes the sign and looks at it.”
SUCCESS (Good Perception, rolled +4)

Valeria takes the waxed token from his hand. It is cold and slick with tunnel damp, the seal pressed hard enough to leave a shallow ridge under her thumb.

Valeria Asiaticus
The stamp is old, but the cut is deliberate.
She turns it once, then again. On the wax, a familiar mark shows through the grime, matched by a tiny nick at the edge, the sort of private sign a man would not trust to a stranger.

The Hooded Stranger
You see it now. He used that sign when he meant to be found by no one but his own.
Behind them, the workman stares at the token as if it might leap from her fingers. Far below, water keeps ticking into the dark.

The Hooded Stranger
If you keep the token, you keep my voice with it. If you cast it away, I tell you what Messalina’s people have already opened beneath the arena.
Valeria closes her fist around the sign, and the stranger stills. For the first time, he looks less like a hunter than a man waiting to be judged.
+ New Item Acquired
Waxed token
“"Um, thanks. Would you mind telling me what this all means?"”
SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled -1)

Valeria Asiaticus
Would you tell me what this means?

The Hooded Stranger
It means your father marked a man he trusted, and Messalina's people hunted the mark after he died. It also means I was close enough to know the smell of that bargain.

The Hooded Stranger
This token is a promise. Not of safety, just of truth. He told me to live, so I did. Now I pay that debt by warning you.
He shifts his weight and the blade in his sleeve scrapes stone, a dry little sound in the tunnel. The workman flinches so hard he knocks grit from the wall.

The Hooded Stranger
Below the arena, men are opening channels they should not touch. If you want the rest, you must choose who leaves this place knowing your face.
The damp air hangs between them. Valeria keeps the token in her fist while the stranger waits, patient and dangerous, for her answer.
“"I think my face is pretty well known by now. What I need to keep secret is my location."”
SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +0)

Valeria Asiaticus
My face is known enough already. It is my location I need hidden.

The Hooded Stranger
Good. Names can be traded. A hiding place must be kept.

The Hooded Stranger
He studies her a long moment, then lowers the knife hand out of sight.
The workman swallows and stays still, as if silence itself might earn him a way out. Somewhere below them, water keeps moving through the dark.

The Hooded Stranger
Your father said the same thing once, before Rome made him speak careful. He trusted too few people, and yet he still trusted me with one thing.
The stranger reaches into his cloak and sets the token down between them, no longer pretending it is a weapon.

The Hooded Stranger
Keep the token if you want. I can tell you which route leads away from prying eyes, or I can vanish and leave you with the choice.
“She takes the token. "Tell me what you know."”
SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +1)

Valeria reaches down and takes the token, closing her fingers around it before the stranger can retract even a breath of it. The little waxed thing turns cold in her palm.

Valeria Asiaticus
Tell me what you know.

The Hooded Stranger
The channels are being worked from below, not above. Someone is opening paths where the arena should stay blind.

The Hooded Stranger
I know one route that avoids their eyes. I know one man who is already paid to keep silent. And I know your name is only a problem if it is heard in the wrong stone passage.
The workman flinches at that, glancing from Valeria to the dark water and back again. The stranger does not reach for his blade, but he watches her hand on the token as if measuring whether she means to keep it or crush it.

The Hooded Stranger
Choose quickly, Myrina. I can lead you out, or I can leave you with knowledge and a memory of my face.
“"We'll try it your way."”
SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +0)

Valeria Asiaticus
We try it your way.
Valeria slips the token out of sight and steps aside from the broken ledge, making room for the stranger to pass.

The Hooded Stranger
Good. Keep your head down and your name buried.
He moves first, one hand lifted to warn her off the slick stone, the other pointing into the black channel where the water runs low and fast.

The Workman
I am not staying here.
The workman scrambles after them, too frightened to choose the wrong side of the fork, while the purse of coins sits forgotten somewhere behind in the tunnels.
The stranger glances back once, then leads them toward the deeper bend, where the passage narrows and the dark swallows sound.
“She follows him.”
SUCCESS (Superb Agility, rolled +2)

Valeria drops into the wake of the stranger, boots skidding once on wet stone before her balance catches. The channel narrows, the water tugging at her steps, but she keeps moving in his wake.
Ahead, the hooded man angles his shoulder to one side and lowers his pace just enough for her to stay with him. The workman splashes after, breathing hard, afraid to be left alone in the dark.

The Hooded Stranger
Good. Stay close, and do not speak unless I tell you.

Valeria Asiaticus
The passage bends left. The sound of water is louder here.
The three of them slip under a rib of black stone where the roof dips low. The fork is gone behind them now, swallowed by dripping darkness and the smear of reflected lamp-glow.

The Workman
By the gods, if there is a way out, take it fast.
The stranger does not answer. He only raises two fingers, then points into the deeper channel ahead, inviting Valeria to choose whether to trust his lead or force him to explain.
“She gestures for him to continue.”
SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +0)

Valeria lifts two fingers from the water and makes a small, flat gesture for him to go on. The hooded stranger catches it at once and gives a curt nod, his shoulders loosening by a fraction.

The Hooded Stranger
Then keep your eyes on my back. The channel turns again ahead.
He starts forward without waiting, and the hidden current pulls at his boots as he leads them under the low stone. The workman swallows hard and hurries after, splashing noisily in the black water.

The Workman
I am still with you. I am still with you.
The stranger glances back once, then slows just enough to let Valeria draw level. He taps the wall beside her, where the damp stone bears a fresh scrape, then points on into the dark as if the tunnel itself were answering him.

The Hooded Stranger
There. That mark is recent. Someone has been through here before us.
Ahead, the passage opens by a handspan, and a thin draft slides out from somewhere unseen. The workman stares at it like a miracle, while the hooded man waits for Valeria to decide whether to follow the fresh air or press him for more.
“She gestures for him to continue.”
SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +1)

Valeria gives the stranger the barest forward flick of her fingers, and the signal lands cleanly. He answers with a quick nod and moves at once, choosing the draft over caution.

The Hooded Stranger
Good. Stay light on your feet. The tunnel opens into it.
He leads them through the narrowing throat of stone. The water thins underfoot, then drops away, and the air turns colder against Valeria's face.
The passage spits them into a cramped crawlspace beside a rusted grating. Beyond it, lower channels murmur in the dark, and the old tunnel behind them falls silent.

The Workman
We made it... by the gods, we made it.
The hooded man stops where the scrape-mark ends, then lowers his hand from the wall. He is no longer pressing Valeria onward, only waiting, as if he has brought her to the edge of a choice and means to see which side she takes.
“She inspects the grating.”
FAILURE (Good Perception, rolled -3)

Valeria crouches by the grating and runs her fingers along the rusted bars. The metal shifts under her touch, not enough to open, but enough to show a fresh scrape hidden beneath the corrosion.

Valeria Asiaticus
Someone has worked this open recently.
She leans closer, then stops. Through the lattice she sees a thick seam of silt and a pale shimmer of moving water below, but no clear handhold, no simple latch, only a narrow gap and iron too eaten to trust.

The Hooded Stranger
Not by force. It gives only when the flood takes it.
The workman flinches back from the opening, one hand over his mouth as if the dark might hear him. The little crawlspace feels smaller now, with the way out beyond the bars and the way back swallowed in blackness.

The Hooded Stranger
If you mean to go farther, decide now. The drain below moves soon.
“There seems no choice but to drop down into the water, so she does that.”
SUCCESS (Superb Agility, rolled -3)

Valeria commits and drops through the narrow gap. Cold water takes her at the shins, then the knees, and the drain gulps at her boots as she lands in a crouch on slick stone.
The rush below yanks at her balance. Her palms slap the channel wall, and a hard scrape bites her forearm as she catches herself before the current can spin her under.
Behind her, the opening vanishes into shadow. Ahead, the drain widens into a black ribbon of moving water, with the sound of a larger chamber somewhere beyond it.

The Hooded Stranger
Mind your footing. The flow here turns bad near the bend.

The Workman
I am not staying in this water any longer than I must.
The workman scrambles down after her with a strangled gasp, splashing hard enough to send ripples slapping the walls. Somewhere above, the crawlspace opening seals itself to a thin line of darkness.
The stranger follows last, one hand braced to the stone, eyes fixed on Valeria as the drain carries them toward the hidden opening ahead.
“Having no choice, she keeps going.”
SUCCESS (Superb Agility, rolled -2)

Valeria keeps low and lets the current take her. The channel narrows, but she slips through the tightest part without stopping.
The cost lands fast, a brutal knock of stone on her shin, and the cold bites deeper where the scrape on her forearm has opened under the water.

The Hooded Stranger
Good. Keep your head down. The flow changes after this bend.

The Workman
This way, this way, I can see a ledge.
The workman slips ahead in a flurry of splashes, and the drain opens into a low chamber where the water swirls hard around a broken pillar.
A rusted side grate gapes in the wall beside them, and beyond it the passage splits, one route black and low, the other climbing toward a tighter shaft. The stranger slows at Valeria's shoulder, waiting.
“"Now what?"”
SUCCESS (Good Reasoning, rolled -1)

Valeria stops the drift with one hand on the broken pillar. She looks from the black, low passage to the tighter shaft above, and the chamber seems to hold its breath with her.

Valeria Asiaticus
Now what?

The Hooded Stranger
The low one keeps to the drains. The upper one climbs toward a service hatch, but it narrows fast.

The Workman
The drain is safer. I know drains.
The stranger tilts his head toward the dark water, then toward the shaft. The workman presses back against the pillar, eyes fixed on Valeria as if her choice can still save him.

The Hooded Stranger
Choose quickly. If the patrol finds this chamber, we lose the luxury of options.
Valeria takes the lower route. The current hammers at her calves, and the scrape on her arm stings as she goes, but the passage opens enough to admit her. The workman splashes after her, and the stranger follows without protest, his knife still lowered.
“"So, where does the service hatch go?"”
SUCCESS (Good Reasoning, rolled +3)

Valeria Asiaticus
So, where does the service hatch go?

The Hooded Stranger
Up to a maintenance gallery under the arena floor. From there, a lattice of passages, some old enough for the builders to have forgotten them.

The Workman
And it reaches the bell room, I think. Or the lamp stores. I have seen men go that way with tools.
The stranger answers at once, and for the first time his tone carries certainty instead of caution. He reaches the side grate and nudges it with two fingers, as if testing a promise. The workman stares at the opening like it is an altar.

The Hooded Stranger
It is open now. Not forced, opened. Someone wants this route used.

The Workman
Opened for who?
A cold draft breathes through the hatch, carrying the stink of pitch and wet iron. Behind them, the drain murmurs on, but the path above waits like a mouth. The stranger looks to Valeria, and the workman does too, suddenly aware that the answer has named a danger none of them can ignore.
“(grumble) "So many spelunkers skulking about! If some stranger wants me up there, then I don't think I should go. At least, I'm pretty sure that the drains will eventually take us out."”
SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +2)

Valeria Asiaticus
So many spelunkers skulking about. If someone wants me up there, I do not think I should go. The drains will take us out eventually.

The Hooded Stranger
Then take the drains. I will not force the hatch on you.
The stranger lifts both hands away from the opening, showing empty palms in the dim. The workman lets out a shaky breath and shuffles back from the grate.

The Workman
Praise the gods. I knew that passage smelled wrong.
Valeria chooses the wet channel, and the decision lands at once. The side hatch remains open behind them, but untouched, as the current tugs at her boots and pulls the group onward.

The Hooded Stranger
Keep close. The drain bends twice before it reaches daylight.
Ahead, the passage narrows into darkness and the water runs faster, carrying them toward whatever waits beyond the bends.
“She says a brief prayer to Poseidon and continues.”

Valeria Asiaticus
Poseidon, keep the water under me, and the stones above.
She goes on, boots steadying in the current. The hooded stranger and the workman follow in silence, and the bend ahead swallows the last thin light from the grate.
“Having no choice, she continues.”
SUCCESS (Good Health, rolled +2)

The current bears Valeria through the bend, and the tunnel narrows into a black throat of stone. The workman stumbles after her, splashing and cursing under his breath, while the hooded stranger keeps pace a few steps back.

The Hooded Stranger
This way. Keep low, and the drain will spit us out where the patrol cannot follow.
The passage pitches downward. Valeria reaches the far side first, boots striking firmer ground as the water thins around her ankles.

The Workman
Blessed gods, there is solid stone again.
Ahead, the tunnel opens into a cramped chamber split by two exits, one slanting up and one sinking away into darkness. The stranger slows behind Valeria, watching both openings.

The Hooded Stranger
There. We are out of the drain, for now. Choose quickly, or the water and the men behind us will choose for you.
“"You don't know?" She turns to the workman, "What do you say?"”
FAILURE (Good Reasoning, rolled -2)

Valeria Asiaticus
You do not know? What do you say?
The workman freezes with one foot on the dry stone and one still in the stream. He looks from the rising passage to the lower dark, swallowing hard, as if the chamber has suddenly become a court and he is expected to swear to it.

The Workman
I, I only know the lower way. The rising one... I have not been that far. It may open. It may also dead-end on a seal or a shaft. I would not trust it.
The hooded stranger does not answer at once. He shifts his weight, placing himself half between Valeria and the descending mouth, while the water keeps pressing at the chamber behind them.

The Hooded Stranger
He tells the truth as far as he knows it. But truth is thin down here. Choose before the current changes its mind.
The workman’s gaze drops to the knife at the stranger’s side, then to Valeria’s face, and he edges one step toward her, afraid to be left with either exit.

The Workman
If you mean to ask me, lady, I can only point. I will go where you go, but I cannot promise the stone beyond it.
“"Well, Poseidon has done all right by me so far. I suppose I can trust him a bit further." She takes the lower way”
SUCCESS (Good Health, rolled -1)

Valeria gives the lower dark a glance, then commits. She steps off the dry lip and into the stream, the water biting cold at her calves as the chamber yields behind her.

Valeria Asiaticus
Well, Poseidon has done all right by me so far. I suppose I can trust him a bit further.
The workman flinches at the splash and stays where he is, stranded between the two mouths. The hooded stranger lets Valeria pass without stopping her, but his eyes track her move with sharpened attention.
The lower passage takes her weight at once. The current grabs at her shins and drags grit over her scraped arm, while the chamber lip slips out of reach behind her.

The Hooded Stranger
Then go. If the water turns, it will not wait for either of us.
Valeria clears the split chamber by the lower way, and the turn becomes final. The upper choice remains behind, sealed by distance and darkness, while the tunnel ahead narrows into black water and a fresh pull downstream.
“"If I drown, I drown," she thinks. There is no going back now,.”
SUCCESS (Good Health, rolled +2)

The current takes Valeria into its grip, but she keeps her footing. Water climbs to her knees, cold and heavy, while the chamber behind her shrinks into a black seam.

Valeria Asiaticus
If I drown, I drown.
She wades on. The tunnel narrows, and the stream forces her straight ahead, no room left for doubt or turning back.

The Hooded Stranger
Keep moving. The water is deeper ahead, but it runs.
Behind her, the workman stays on the dry lip, a pale shape in the dark, too afraid to follow and too afraid to stay.
Valeria clears the last of the split chamber. The lower way opens into a single, flooded passage, and the fork is gone from her reach.

The Hooded Stranger
Good. Now we are past the choice.
He steps after her, still wary, but no longer blocking her path. The tunnel carries them forward together, and the dark swallows the ledge behind.
“Belatedly, she remembers that she is not a strong swimmer. But it looks like she will have to take her chances before long.”
SUCCESS (Good Health, rolled +1)

The tunnel tightens around Valeria, but the current eases enough for her to find a steadier rhythm. Her boots feel for the stone under the black water, and the passage holds her up.

Valeria Asiaticus
The floor drops and rises again.
Ahead, the water shines faintly where it bends, and the narrow channel opens into a low throat of masonry.

The Hooded Stranger
There. Keep left. The stone edge is less treacherous.
Valeria follows the line he indicates, and the flooded passage carries her clear of the worst depth. The water falls away to a shallower run, then to slick, walkable stone.
The hooded stranger comes up beside her, no longer behind her, while the workman is left far back in the dark and the old choice vanishes into the tunnel's bend.
“"Is that daylight I see? Poseidon is kind. I thought we were on the River Styx."”
SUCCESS (Good Perception, rolled +1)

The bend opens at last, and the faint shine ahead is not water alone. It spills in a pale line across the ceiling, too steady to be torchlight.

Valeria Asiaticus
Is that daylight I see? Poseidon is kind. I thought we were on the River Styx.
The hooded stranger stops short and looks up too, his shoulders loosening as the stone throat widens before them.

The Hooded Stranger
Daylight, yes. A drain mouth above us, if my guess holds.
Valeria reaches the brighter seam first. It is an opening in the masonry, and cold daylight pours through from outside, washing the tunnel in silver.
Beyond the lip, the passage breaks into a final chamber of slick stone and a barred outlet, half-lost under running water. The route behind them is swallowed by dark.

The Hooded Stranger
We are out of the maze. Now decide who goes through that light with you.
“"Why must I choose? You choose. If the workman is leaving us now, I should give him a tip."”
SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +0)

Valeria Asiaticus
Why must I choose? You choose. If the workman is leaving us now, I should give him a tip.
Valeria flicks a coin toward the terrified workman, a small, dry sound against wet stone. The man stares at it like it might bite, then snatches it and presses himself back from the current.

The Hooded Stranger
You have a sharper hand than many nobles, and a kinder one. Very well, I choose.

The Hooded Stranger
Take the daylight route. If I am wrong, I pay the price first.
He shifts aside from the opening and lowers his knife hand, turning the passage into a clear way out instead of a trap. The workman clutches his coin and crawls for the bright seam without looking back.

The Hooded Stranger
Her father would have approved that.
The chamber settles into a tense calm, the barred outlet ahead and the water hissing below, while the stranger keeps his place to let Valeria pass first.
