Valeria steps out into the Forum’s glare, the dispatch pouch heavy in her hand. The Rostra looms ahead, ringed by traders, petitioners, and idlers all shouting over one another.
The Hooded Stranger stays back in the portico’s shadow, watching the square with a hunter’s patience. Somewhere beyond the noise, a patrol whistle cuts short and distant.

Valeria Asiaticus
The crowd is the shield. The Rostra is the target.
A pair of merchants turn at her movement. One squints, seeing only a helmeted gladiatrix; the other glances toward the sentries near the basilica and frowns.

The Hooded Stranger
Now. If you want Rome to hear it, you do it here, before the Guard closes the jaws.
Valeria reaches the open space before the steps, the seal and cord of Messalina’s dispatch catching the sun. The next shout, the next gesture, decides whether the Forum becomes her witness or her cage.
“You only live once. She climbs the temple steps to stand before the public and announces, "Citizens of Rome! I am Valeria Asiaticus and I bear a message from the Emperor's wife, who as you all know, must be above suspicion." With that, she reads the whole thing aloud.”

Valeria climbs the steps in a straight line, boots striking stone, the Forum noise thinning under her voice. She raises the sealed pouch high enough for nearby faces to catch the cord and wax.

Valeria Asiaticus
Citizens of Rome, I am Valeria Asiaticus, and I bear a message from the Emperor’s wife, who, as you all know, must be above suspicion.
She breaks the seal and reads. The first names and instructions draw a ripple through the square, then a hard hush as people lean in to hear every word.
A merchant drops a bundle of figs. Another man points at the tablet and starts swearing under his breath. The crowd turns from curiosity to anger, one voice feeding the next.
At the edge of the steps, a few sentries stiffen and exchange glances. The Hooded Stranger stays in shadow, watching the square instead of Valeria, ready for the state to move.
By the last lines, the forum has changed shape around her. The dispatch is no longer a secret, and the first angry questions are already rising toward the basilicas.

“She posts the message on the public notice board ("alba") and starts looking around for the hooded stranger. She has some questions for him.”
SUCCESS (Superb Agility, rolled +0)

Valeria slips down from the steps and pins the posted tablet beside the public notices, where any passerby can read it. The crowd keeps talking around her, but the board itself becomes the new center of attention.
She turns her head, scanning the porticoes and the knot of onlookers. The hooded stranger is no longer lost in the glare of the steps, he is waiting in the shade near the colonnade, watching her with patient approval.

The Hooded Stranger
You did it in the open. That matters more than any whisper.

Valeria Asiaticus
The notice board is crowded with names, dates, and complaints. Her dispatch sits among them now.

The Hooded Stranger
Messalina built her trap on secrecy. You have made it public property.
His voice stays low, almost companionable, while the Forum noise rolls on behind him. For a moment, the threat of sentries and trumpets feels distant, held back by the simple fact that the words are already out.

Valeria Asiaticus
Then tell me what you know next.

The Hooded Stranger
Gladly. But first, look at their faces, they are deciding whether to fear you or listen to you.
“"I know these Romans. They are excited at the moment, but they are fickle in their moods. And a gladiatrix is no Marcus Antonius. Best we leave before the Praetorians arrive."”
