The High Priestess leads Valeria and Aurelia past a bronze-lipped door into the temple archives. Cool air replaces incense, and the torchlight turns thin over stone shelves packed with scrolls, tablets, and tied bundles of records.

The High Priestess
Here, the priests wrote what the magistrates forgot. If your house has a truth, it may have a shadow here too.
Aurelia stops beside a cracked ledger stand, one hand resting on its edge. Valeria studies the nearest shelf, where a waxed tablet bears a faded imperial seal beside older temple marks.

Valeria Asiaticus
The seal was copied more than once.

Aurelia
My husband feared records more than steel. If he hid this vow, he would hide it in a place like this.
The priestess draws out a bundle of old notices and sets them beneath the lamp. Dust lifts in the light as she separates one brittle strip from another, then points toward a shelf marked with the years of Claudius.

The High Priestess
Search there. The answer is either filed with the imperial summons, or buried beside it.

Find the family record in the archives
“She searches the archives.”
SUCCESS (Good Perception, rolled -1)

Valeria slides the nearest wax tablet free, and a grit of old dust falls onto her wrist. The seal is a copy, but the hand beneath it is not the magistrates' hand. It is temple-registered, cramped, and hurried.

Valeria Asiaticus
The same scribe keeps showing up.
Aurelia leans in beside her, and the priestess lifts another bundle from the shelf marked with Claudius's years. One tablet slips from the cord and cracks against the stone with a dry snap, making both women freeze.

The High Priestess
No louder than that. If the archives wake up, they will wake the whole temple.
Valeria finds a filing strip tied to the broken tablet, then another beneath it. The same name repeats in ink faded brown with age, first as a clerk, then as a witness, then as a carrier between records.

Aurelia
That is him. He handled my husband's house papers before the vow was sealed.
The priestess draws out one last record, a temple receipt for a sealed deposit. It lists the imperial summons, the household vow, and a second hand noting the tablets were moved after darkness, not before.
Valeria has the family record now, but the price is plain, the cracked tablet leaves a fresh white line across her palm, and the priestess is already turning the receipt toward the lamp for another reading.
