The Colosseum roars as Valeria enters the sand with Marcus Flavius watching from the rail. Veteran Hoplomacha waits opposite, spear leveled and feet planted just inside the boundary.

Veteran Hoplomacha

Veteran Hoplomacha

Come inside, Myrina. The spear cannot reach you if you refuse the distance forever.

Valeria gives ground by inches, preserving the boundary while the veteran turns with her. The spearhead follows, testing rather than striking, until the measured circling begins to draw impatient murmurs.

A feigned stumble finally invites the thrust. Valeria slips off the line, enters beneath the recovering shaft, and turns it aside with a clean touch to the veteran’s arm.

Veteran Hoplomacha

Veteran Hoplomacha

Enough. That was earned.

The herald records Valeria’s victory and full purse without a second exchange. Marcus raises one hand in approval, while the sealed inquiry continues elsewhere: the Examiner carries the corroborated packet toward the magistrate, and Herennius remains under escort.

The lawful finding against Gaius Marcellus is not yet pronounced, but the records now establish the unauthorized addition. Valeria leaves the sand undefeated, with her next choice still her own.

“Valeria is impressed with the Veteran Hoplomacha and invites her to lunch, spending a bit of her prize money.”

The bout’s purse is secured, and Valeria approaches Veteran Hoplomacha beyond the arena gate. Marcus Flavius follows at an easy distance as the veteran lowers her spear.

Valeria Asiaticus

Valeria Asiaticus

You controlled the distance honestly. Join me for lunch. I will pay, and we can speak without turning respect into obligation.

Veteran Hoplomacha

Veteran Hoplomacha

A meal paid from your own purse, with no bargain hidden beneath it? Yes, Myrina. I accept.

They walk toward Dama’s grill outside the Colosseum. Valeria places part of her prize money on the counter and orders a generous meal for the veteran, Marcus, and herself.

Marcus Flavius

Marcus Flavius

Good. Skill deserves recognition, and a shared table need not become a chain.

Veteran Hoplomacha

Then let us eat as fellow fighters. Your entry beneath the shaft was clean, and I would hear how you saw the opening.

Dama serves the food steaming from the grill. Valeria’s purse grows lighter, but the meal is paid, the invitation accepted, and the veteran sits with them freely beneath the Colosseum’s fading roar.

“"Actually, I welcome any excuse to spend a bit of money with Dama. She is the best grill chef in Rome. But enough of that, you really hold yourself like a soldier. How did you come to fight in the arena?"”

I welcome any excuse to spend money with Dama. She is the best grill chef in Rome. But you hold yourself like a soldier. How did you come to fight in the arena?

Dama sets down another platter with a knowing grunt, while Marcus eats quietly. The veteran studies Valeria over the steam, recognizing a serious question rather than idle praise.

Veteran Hoplomacha

Veteran Hoplomacha

I was a soldier before I was a fighter. I served long enough to learn that discipline protects you only while someone else honors the terms.

She breaks a piece of bread and speaks without bitterness. Her spear rests against the wall within sight, a tool now rather than a threat.

Veteran Hoplomacha

Veteran Hoplomacha

When my service ended, an arena trainer offered steady meals and pay for my skill. I accepted because the bargain was clear, and stayed because I found I could choose how to fight.

Veteran Hoplomacha

Veteran Hoplomacha

The arena is less honorable than the army in some ways, and more honest in others. A spear does not pretend about distance. Neither should a contract, or a fellow fighter.

Marcus gives a small approving nod. Dama refills the cups, and the veteran’s account settles naturally between them, shared freely and owing Valeria nothing beyond the meal already promised.

“"But the phalangists fight in tight formations, with a comrade to the right and the left, and the spearmen in back supporting those in front. Arena fighting is solo combat, which is very different."”

Phalanx fighters stand in tight formation, with a comrade on either side and spearmen behind supporting those in front. Arena combat is solitary, and entirely different.

Veteran Hoplomacha

Veteran Hoplomacha

Exactly. In formation, your neighbors guard the spaces your spear cannot. Alone, every opening belongs to you, and every mistake belongs to you alone.

The veteran touches two fingers to the table, marking an imaginary line of shields, then withdraws one hand and leaves the other exposed beside her cup.

Veteran Hoplomacha

Veteran Hoplomacha

That is why your feigned stumble worked. You made me believe I had found a weakness, then entered the space no comrade could close for me.

Marcus Flavius

Marcus Flavius

And why a veteran’s discipline matters. She understood the formation, then learned to fight without one. You recognized both lessons before choosing your entry.

Veteran Hoplomacha raises her cup toward Valeria. Around them, Dama’s grill crackles and the Colosseum’s fading roar becomes ordinary city noise. The meal ends as fellowship, with no bargain attached.

“"Well, we should schedule a rematch sometime. I would not like to walk away without giving you a chance to avenge yourself, and I don't think my trick will work a second time."”

SUCCESS (Legendary Oratory, rolled -1)

Well, we should schedule a rematch sometime. I would not like to walk away without giving you a chance to avenge yourself, and I do not think my trick will work a second time.

Veteran Hoplomacha

Veteran Hoplomacha

Then we shall schedule it. I will not mistake that stumble twice, and you will not find the same opening waiting for you.

The veteran extends her cup across the table. The gesture makes the rematch a shared intention rather than a debt, and Valeria’s invitation is accepted without condition.

Marcus Flavius

Marcus Flavius

That is a worthy promise from both of you. Schedule it openly, keep the terms clean, and let the next bout answer the question.

Veteran Hoplomacha

Veteran Hoplomacha

To a rematch, then, when our schedules and the arena allow it. Next time I will make you earn every step inside my reach.

Their cups meet above the worn table. The promise is neither patronage nor obligation, only a future contest freely chosen by two fighters who now understand one another’s craft.

“"My promise then. But I can't set a date yet. I'm mixed up in a legal case and may be called as a witness."”

My promise, then. But I cannot set a date yet. I am involved in a legal case and may be called as a witness.

Veteran Hoplomacha

Veteran Hoplomacha

Then we set no date today. When the court releases your time, send word, and I will meet you openly for the rematch.

The veteran lowers her cup and accepts the explanation without suspicion. Their promise remains intact, while the date waits upon Valeria’s lawful obligations.

Marcus Flavius

Marcus Flavius

That is properly said. Keep the case and the rematch separate, and let neither become a chain upon the other.

Veteran Hoplomacha offers her forearm across the table. Valeria’s promise is accepted without a date, patron, or obligation beyond the contest itself.

Veteran Hoplomacha

Veteran Hoplomacha

Then we part as fellow fighters. Finish what Rome requires of you, and call me when you are free.

The meal ends in easy fellowship. The veteran departs with her spear and dignity, while Marcus walks beside Valeria toward home and the next lawful summons.

“The day's business concluded, she goes home to share the news and the prize money with her family.”

Valeria reaches the small house with Marcus Flavius after the long walk from the Colosseum. The effort has rubbed one heel raw, but her purse and victory remain secure.

Aurelia opens the door. Valeria places the prize money on the household table and sets the bout’s recorded result beside it, making the day’s success visible to everyone.

Aurelia

Aurelia

A lawful victory, a full purse, and no new chain upon you. Your father would have understood the worth of that.

Nestor draws the coins into counted portions for bread, oil, repairs, and the family reserve. Castor and Pollux crowd the table, trying to inspect the purse without upsetting his order.

Nestor

This pays what must be paid and leaves something behind. That is how a prize becomes provision rather than a passing triumph.

Marcus Flavius

Marcus Flavius

She earned it cleanly. Veteran Hoplomacha accepted the defeat, and their rematch will wait until Valeria’s legal duties are finished.

The household receives the news without extravagant promises. Aurelia closes her hand over the first counted portion, and the family settles into an evening made safer by Valeria’s work.
