Before the cheers settle, Veteran Hoplomacha breaks from her poised stillness and drives the spear through a deliberately narrow opening. Valeria must yield ground toward the marked boundary.
Veteran Hoplomacha
Work for every breath, Myrina! I promised Rome a contest, not a courtesy.
The spearhead stops short of Valeria, but the shaft controls the space before her. Veteran Hoplomacha advances behind it, making the opening smaller with each measured step.
Marcus Flavius
Do not chase the point! Turn her, Valeria. Keep the boundary behind your shoulder and wait for the recovery.
A fresh roar rises as the veteran feints high, then snaps the spear low across Valeria’s retreat. The shaft remains controlled, but the maneuver threatens to herd her over the line.
Decimus Severus
Inside the boundary! The sealed terms permit pressure, not a foul. Keep the exchange clean.
Veteran Hoplomacha
Then step back in, Myrina. Show them you can take the space from me.

“She dodges the spear point and pounds her shield with her sword, as practiced.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Melee Combat, rolled +0)
Valeria slips outside the low sweep, letting the spear pass beside her armor. The fitted gladiator plates turn the glancing shaft aside without slowing her balance.
Her blunted sword crashes against the veteran’s shield in a hard, ringing rhythm. Each blow is controlled, but loud enough for every tier to hear, and the Crowd Favorite’s roar swells behind it.
Veteran Hoplomacha
So that is your answer, Myrina? Then take the space you have won!
Valeria steps inside the spear’s reach and pounds the shield again, using the showmanship of each measured strike to make the exchange look more dangerous than it is. The veteran gives ground.
Marcus Flavius
Good. Turn the weapon, not yourself. Make her carry the force of every answer.
The final shield blow drives the spear line wide and restores clear ground inside the boundary. Valeria’s sword remains ready, her armor steady, and the crowd now believes she has seized the initiative.
Decimus Severus
Clean work. The exchange remains within the sealed terms, and the advantage is yours.
