The Magistrate's Ultimatum

The Magistrate pushes through the curtain, all polished calm and hungry eyes. He stops at the altar table, where the token and blood-dark tablet lie together in the priestess’s hands.

The Magistrate

The Magistrate

Enough riddles. Tell me what vow your father made, and why it binds this house to a forbidden mark.

The High Priestess tightens her grip on the relics, her gaze flicking between Valeria and the official. Aurelia stands very still, pale but composed, as if moving might crack the room open.

Aurelia

Aurelia

He thought silence would keep us safe. He made the rite with fear in his heart, and fear answered him.

The Magistrate’s expression does not change, but his attention sharpens. He has heard enough to make the family confession into leverage.

The Magistrate

The Magistrate

Then your safety is no longer private. If this rite hides a crime, I can hold this tablet, your mother, and you until Rome learns the truth.

He wants the vow named aloud, on record, before witnesses.

Outside the curtain, the temple seems to hold its breath. The token and tablet still gleam with the same dark shine, but now they feel like evidence, not protection.

"Wait, there is a curse on this tablet. And there may be a curse on our family, which has had more than its share of ill fortune since this vow was made. Don't take any rash action you may later regret."

Valeria Asiaticus

Wait. This tablet carries a curse, and our house may carry one too. We have already suffered enough for that vow. Do nothing rash that you may regret.

The Magistrate

The Magistrate

A curse is a convenient name, but I hear a warning. Speak clearly, girl, or I will treat this as another layer of concealment.

The High Priestess

The High Priestess

Heed her. The mark on the tablet is not clean, and fear has clung to this family like lamp smoke. Haste would only stain your judgment further.

Aurelia

Aurelia

He meant to shelter us, not condemn us. If the rite drew misfortune, then let that be weighed before any hand reaches for punishment.

The Magistrate

The Magistrate

You ask me to stay my hand in the name of prudence, not innocence. That is wiser than silence, at least.

The magistrate eases back from the altar table. He does not touch the relics. The priestess keeps them cupped in both hands, and Aurelia’s shoulders loosen by a fraction as the room breathes again.

The High Priestess

The High Priestess

Then let us keep speaking while the house still stands. Magistrate, will you hear the rest of her mother’s account before you decide what Rome calls this family?
