Daughter to one of the conspirators against Caligula, who was executed by Emperor Claudius. His family was spared, but have been reduced to genteel poverty, with only a small house and one remaining slave, an elderly Greek who tutors her younger brothers. Her family owes many debts, which she hopes to repay by winning prizes in the arena as a gladiatrix.

GOAL & MOTIVE

Valeria Asiaticus aims to win prizes in the arena to pay off the family debts. Fights between women are novelty acts in the arena, intended to warm up the spectators for the main event. Showmanship counts for more than swordsmanship, and fights often end in draws, but it is possible to get killed, especially if matched against one of those glory-seeking aristocratic women who fight as a hobby, or some wild barbarian who just likes to kill Romans.

NEMESIS

Practicing her sword skills one day, she saw a woman emerge from the male gladiator's quarters, having enjoyed their company for some time. This was Messalina, a distant relative. The two women ignored each other, because they both had secrets to conceal. Later, when Messalina married the Emperor Claudius, she became anxious that Valeria might reveal her secret and ruin her. She seeks, by various underhanded methods, to silence the aspiring gladiatrix for good.

THE WORLD

Rome in the First Century A.D.. a time of political uncertainty, under the rule of the Emperor Claudius and his scheming wife Messalina. About a third of the population are slaves, most of the rest plebians. Power resides in a corrupt patrician class. Women have no status and are barred from public office. Foreigners of every stripe may be found in Rome, and the cults of many nations. Rome rules the known world, though sometimes with a shaky hand.
