The cellar door yawns open into the Subura, and stink rolls in with it, roasting meat, sewer water, sweat, and smoke. Above the narrow lane, voices and cart wheels blur together. No one looks up long in this quarter.
Valeria steps to the threshold with the sealed dispatch still hidden close. The Hooded Stranger stays half in shadow behind her, scanning the crowd as if every passerby might be a knife.

The Hooded Stranger
Now. Break it here, where the noise swallows the truth.
A fishmonger shouts nearby. Two boys run past with bread crusts in their fists. The lane stays busy, careless, perfect for a secret to become a scandal.

Valeria Asiaticus
Valeria opens the dispatch and reads what Messalina sends.
The seal gives with a dry crack. The tablet inside catches the gutter light, and whatever is written there now belongs to Valeria, and to the city if she chooses to show it.

The Hooded Stranger
If it names you, we move at once. If it names her, you have your opening.

opened dispatch
“She reads the dispatch.”
SUCCESS (Good Reasoning, rolled -1)

Valeria’s eyes move line by line, and the street noise falls away into meaning. The dispatch orders a summons to the Subura, under seal of Messalina’s household, with witnesses waiting to identify the woman who carries the gladiatrix mask.

Valeria Asiaticus
So she wants me seen.
A cart jolts past the doorway. Valeria’s grip tightens, and a smear of wet ink stains her thumb from the tablet’s edge.

The Hooded Stranger
That is the opening. She names the hunt, and Rome can hear it.
He leans in, reading just enough to confirm it, then looks toward the lane where a knot of neighbors is already gathering at the shouted commotion.
The dispatch is now bare in Valeria’s hands, its seal broken and useless. Somewhere nearby, a woman laughs too loudly, and a passerby slows, curious.

The Hooded Stranger
Show them, or lose the moment.
“She reads it aloud.”
SUCCESS (Fair Oratory, rolled +2)

Valeria lifts her chin and gives the lane the tablet’s verdict in a clear, carrying voice. The nearest heads turn at once, and the mutter at the doorway sharpens into attention.
She reads the names, the place, the seal, and the order to summon the masked gladiatrix under Messalina’s eye. The crowd hears its own street suddenly written into imperial business.
A woman at the cart stops mid-step. A pair of boys stare from under a hanging sheet. The lane begins to gather around the sound of the dispatch like iron filings to a magnet.

The Hooded Stranger
That is enough. Keep going.
Valeria reads on, and the message loses every private shelter it had left. The broken seal lies useless in her palm while the alley takes the words from her mouth and keeps them.
From somewhere deeper in the Subura, a watch whistle cuts once through the market din. The crowd starts to press closer, hungry now, and the hooded man shifts to Valeria’s flank.
