The Colosseum’s quarters hang in an uneasy hush. Women in training gear keep to the walls, eyes down, as if silence might spare them.

Valeria Asiaticus stands among her gear, helmet near at hand, while Marcus Flavius paces with a drained face and a tight jaw.

At the center of the room, a messenger in Imperial livery watches with a thin, knowing smile. Near him lies a heavy purse, newly dropped, the coins inside clinking once and then settling.

Marcus Flavius

That woman did not come here for sport.

A new gladiatrix steps in from the corridor, refined in posture even in borrowed armor, her chin lifted like someone used to being obeyed.

The Messenger

The Messenger

A gift from the Empress Messalina. For loyalty, for readiness, for good sense.

The room seems to shrink around the purse. No one moves to touch it.

If you value your place here, you should listen carefully.

"I'm all ears, and I still have two of them."

I am all ears, and I still have two of them.

The retort lands cleanly. The messenger's smile thins, and the refined gladiatrix lets out a short, sharp breath through her nose.

The Messenger

The Messenger

Good. Then hear the truth. This is not a favor. It is an order dressed as generosity.

The Refined Gladiatrix

The Refined Gladiatrix

Messalina is done with rumors. She wants your name, your silence, and your obedience.

Marcus stops pacing. His hand closes on the strap of his belt, knuckles pale, as if the room has finally said aloud what he feared.

Marcus Flavius

Marcus Flavius

Valeria, do not touch that purse. Coins from her hand always buy something dearer than coin.

The messenger gives a courteous little tilt of the head toward the purse on the floor, and the metal inside gives a dull, final shift.

"My name is Myrina, as it says on the list. I have nothing to say beyond that, so the silence comes free. Until I emerge from this place, I take orders from Decimus Severus, so you should talk to him if you want me to do something for you."

Valeria Asiaticus

My name is Myrina, as it says on the list. I have nothing else to give you here. Until I step out of this place, I answer to Decimus Severus, so take it to him if you want something from me.

The Messenger

The Messenger

A neat answer. Very Roman. Very safe. I will tell her you hide behind the lanista’s door.

The Refined Gladiatrix

The Refined Gladiatrix

Safe is not the same as untouched. Messalina notices the women who try to be clever.

Marcus Flavius

Marcus Flavius

Let her notice. I have buried soldiers, not girls, and I mean to keep this one breathing.

The messenger reaches down, touches the purse with two fingers, and does not pick it up. It stays where it is, a bright little promise on the floor.

The Refined Gladiatrix

The Refined Gladiatrix

She refuses cleanly. That is the dangerous kind of brave.

Marcus shifts beside Valeria, just enough to make a shield of his body without touching her. The room holds its breath around the purse, waiting for someone to claim it.

"You can add the coins to the prize purse, if you wish. If I die, I will have no use for it, and the other woman may wish to claim it."

Practical. That is what survives in Rome.

The Refined Gladiatrix

There it is, then. Messalina does not buy silence, she buys a stage.

Marcus Flavius

Marcus Flavius

A stage for what?

The Messenger

The Messenger

For a public death, if she is displeased. For obedience, if she is wise.

The Refined Gladiatrix

Keep the purse with the winnings, or spend it on your burial. Either way, she means you to step into the sand.

Marcus goes rigid at that, and the messenger finally lifts his fingers from the purse. No one reaches for it. The coins lie there between them like a sentence.

"If I just wanted gold, I could have become a prostitute, at no risk to myself. But I cling to such shreds of dignity as may be left to me, and they are not for sale."

If I only wanted gold, I could have sold myself for it. I keep what dignity I have left, and that is not for sale.

The words land cleanly in the hush. Even the purse on the floor seems to stop shining for a breath.

Then you understand the choice.

The Refined Gladiatrix

The Refined Gladiatrix

Good. I would hate to think Messalina was wasting coin on a fool.

Marcus Flavius

Marcus Flavius

This is no gift. It is a verdict dressed in silk.

Marcus says it softly, but the room feels changed by it. The messenger does not deny him.

The Refined Gladiatrix

The Refined Gladiatrix

Step into the sand, Valeria Asiaticus. Keep your name hidden, or keep your life. Rome allows only one of those.
