Hunter cuts the truck engine in the driveway and keeps the routing logs tucked tight inside his jacket. The marked vehicle still sits at the property edge, plain as day, watching the house.

Inside the house, Nora and Sarah wait in the kitchen. Both have seen the vehicle, and the room feels sharpened by it, all quiet corners and held breath.

The logs are the proof.

They are not even pretending to hide it anymore.

If Halden's people can park there today, they can keep parking there tomorrow.

Hunter takes the logs out and opens them on the truck window, making the entries and stamps easy to see. The paper trail is no longer just a warning, it is a map of who is reaching into his life and how.

This goes to the Manager, or to Halden, and I make them answer for it.

Nora and Sarah trade one quick look, then both turn toward the house, already moving from worry into action.

Expose the system using Evelyn's logs

I will copy the logs so we have a backup before I confront them.

Hunter sets the notebook against the cab and works fast, copying the log entries by hand. The pages fill with matching stamps, times, and route marks, a second set of proof taking shape in plain sight.

When he flips the last copied line into place, he tucks the duplicate pages under the notebook strap and closes the original logs with care. The backup is made, clean and legible.

Good. If that paper goes missing, we still have this.

Sarah

And now they can all be compared side by side.

Sarah steps out from the doorway with a fresh sheet and a pencil already in hand, while Nora reaches for the copied pages. The kitchen curtain shifts behind them, and the marked vehicle stays parked where it can watch the yard.

The copies are in hand.

Nora straightens the pages, Sarah glances toward the road, and both women turn back toward Hunter with the same question waiting on their faces.

Are the copied logs enough to expose Halden?

NO, AND WORSE (Even, rolled 93)

Hunter holds the copies up to the fading light, but as he compares the ink to the original logs, the stamps begin to blur and bleed into illegible smudges. The paper quality is too poor to hold the official seal, and the ink reacts to the humidity, turning the vital evidence into a useless, gray mess.

Hunter McCready

The ink is failing, and the logs are becoming unreadable.

Nora leans in, her face falling as she watches the crucial data dissolve into nothingness, leaving them with no leverage against the office.

Are the copied logs still usable as evidence?

NO, BUT (VeryUnlikely, rolled 27)

The moisture in the air has completely compromised the paper, leaving the ink to pool into dark, meaningless stains across the page. No amount of careful drying can restore the text, and the evidence is now entirely beyond salvage.

I salvage the ink with fresh copies

Hunter spreads a clean sheet beside the spoiled page and starts rebuilding the route by memory, line by line, from the readable scraps and the shape of what he already knows.

The first column returns in his hand. Then the second. Smudged names become steady again, and the timing marks settle into place.

The route holds if I copy it in the right order.

Nora leans in, watching the fresh ink take where the old one failed, her shoulders easing as the pattern comes back together.

Hunter finishes the reconstruction and slides the new copy next to the blurred original, now readable enough to compare without guesswork.

He catches the contact line intact, the one that gives them a place to call instead of just a name on paper.

Nora

Nora

So that is their route, and now we have a number to answer.

Outside, the marked sedan sits at the property line with its driver still facing the house, as if waiting for someone inside to make the next move.
