The office noise fades behind them as Hunter settles into a strip of shade at the lot’s edge. The market keeps moving, but softer now, like the day is finally exhaling.

Joy sits on a crate with her little wooden toy, turning it over in both hands. Hunter watches from a step away, letting the quiet do its work.

Look, Daddy, it makes a horse sound if I tap it here.

She taps the toy against her palm, pleased with herself. Hunter’s gaze drifts over the reorganized stalls, then back to her, steady and attentive.

That little one has better manners than half the grown men here.

Elias

And a better work ethic, from the looks of it.

Mrs. Gable gives a short laugh. Elias leans near the shade line with easy warmth, the office victory sitting lightly on his face. The moment feels simple enough to hold.

Hunter turns that small smile toward Mrs. Gable and Elias, brief but real, before his attention slips back to Joy. The movement is enough to loosen the air around him. His ink-stained cuff catches the light as his hand settles again near his knee.

That looks better on you than the scowl, you know.

We can all breathe for a minute, at least.

Joy notices the shift and grins up at him, toy still in her hands. She leans a little closer on the crate, relaxed and curious.

Daddy, did we win?

The vendors are still looking out for each other.

Mrs. Gable folds her hands over the flowers she saved from the stall, and Elias glances down the row, where the east side stays gathered instead of drifting apart. The quiet feels good, but it also feels watched.

Elias

Elias

For now, yes. That means somebody keeps an eye on the paperwork, and somebody keeps an eye on the lot.

Hunter looks back to Joy again, and the ease in the shade settles into something sturdier, something that asks for care. The market’s new freedom is real, and so is the work of keeping it.
