Hunter holds his ground at the lane edge, rifle low, as the sedan idles with its window cracked open. Nora and Mrs. Gable stop at the fence line, watching the two office observers with hard, careful faces.

You need to understand, this keeps happening until the office gets a proper answer.

The driver slides a clipboard against the wheel and does not step out. The passenger’s gaze flicks from Hunter to the house, measuring the porch, the yard, the fence.

We are asking for compliance, not trouble. Sign off on the review, and this stops being a problem.

No. You leave the homestead, or you can record that I said no.

Nora lifts her chin beside the fence, and Mrs. Gable folds her arms, making the line behind Hunter feel solid. The driver hesitates, then looks down at the clipboard again, because the office wants pressure, but not a scene it cannot control.

The sedan does not move yet, but the threat changes shape. Hunter can see it now, the office is no longer just watching the homestead, it is trying to make him submit in public.

Hunter closes the distance to the window, and the sedan finally gives ground. The driver’s clipboard drops to their lap, forgotten as the engine shifts into gear.

The office has no right to interfere with my home life. Leave now, or I take this to court for harassment.

The passenger’s face tightens. Nora straightens at the fence, and Mrs. Gable’s folded arms loosen a fraction as the words land cleanly.

...Noted.

The driver signals with two fingers, a small, annoyed motion, and the sedan eases backward from the lane edge.

We will record your position and file the refusal.

The car rolls back another yard, tires crunching gravel, while Nora watches the retreat with sharp relief and Mrs. Gable keeps her eyes on the mirror until the rear bumper clears the property line.

The sedan is gone from the edge of the homestead, but its taillights still glow down the road, promising paperwork instead of peace.
