Three weeks later, the barn feels settled into routine. Late-season produce fills the open crates, and the soft scrape of wood on wood is almost meditative in the sunset hush.
Hunter lines up another crate and checks the labels as he works. Nearby, Joy sits on a hay bale with a basket in her lap, sorting apples with careful concentration.

Hunter McCready
These ones are getting the bruises off before they spoil.

Joy
Daddy, this one looks like a heart.
She lifts an apple with a proud little grin, then sets it in the good pile like it matters very much.

Mrs. Gable
That one does have a nice shape. You two make this look easy.
Mrs. Gable leans in the barn doorway with a warm smile, hands resting on a folded dish towel. The last light catches dust in the air between them.

Elias
Easy is not the word I would use. But it does look good.
Elias pauses beside her, glancing over the crates with quiet approval. Joy kicks her feet once against the hay and looks up, waiting to see who gets the next apple.

Fix the stalled barn chore routine
“I ask Elias and Mrs Gable what brings them by”
SUCCESS (Great Socially Awkward, rolled +0)

Hunter glances up from the labels, then toward the doorway. The question comes out plain, a little rough around the edges, but honest.

Hunter McCready
What brings you two by?

Mrs. Gable
Thought we would lend a hand, if you still want it. Elias says the apples are safer with company.

Elias
And I wanted to see the chore setup for myself, after all that business at the market. It is different seeing a thing in motion instead of hearing about it.
Mrs. Gable steps in farther, a flower tucked at the edge of her towel, and Elias gives the crates an appraising look. Hunter's cuff catches on a splintered crate corner with a sharp rip, and a handful of apple skins skitter onto the straw.

Joy
Daddy, the one with the heart shape rolled away.
Joy slides off the hay bale and reaches for the runaway apple first, then pauses when she notices Hunter's torn sleeve. The barn stays calm, but the work shifts all at once toward her.
“I grab the rolling apple for Joy”
SUCCESS (Fair Agility, rolled +1)

Hunter drops low and catches the apple cleanly before it reaches the straw. He lifts it back up in one hand, dusting it with his thumb as the crate corner gives a tired creak beside him.

Hunter McCready
Still whole.
Joy straightens, her attention snapping to the rescued apple instead of the torn cuff. The little knot of worry in the barn loosens a notch.

Joy
Thanks, Daddy. That one was trying to escape.
Mrs. Gable huffs a soft laugh and shifts closer to the broken crate, flower and towel both tucked safely against her side. Elias crouches to gather the scattered skins into a neat pile.

Elias
Good catch. The routine is not the only thing that needs tightening tonight.
Hunter starts to set the apple with the others, but the split corner sags again with a brittle pop, and Joy is already looking between him and the loose boards, waiting to see which needs him first.

“I steady the crate and finish the chores”
FAILURE (Good Handyman, rolled -4)

Hunter braces a forearm against the split corner and tries to square the crate back into place. The wood answers with a dry slide, not a hold, and the whole stack shivers a little on the straw.

Hunter McCready
It is giving more than I thought.
One side slips lower anyway, and a small spill of apples nudges free against his boot. The barn routine stops being tidy in an instant.

Joy
Daddy, the crate is wobbling again.
Joy takes a half-step forward, then pauses, watching him with both hands held close to her chest. Mrs. Gable shifts her towel and flowers to one arm, ready but waiting.

Elias
If he keeps the weight there, it might hold. But only for a second.
Hunter has the crate braced, but that leaves him pinned in place while the apples keep threatening to roll and Joy waits for him to choose where his hands go next.
“I grab Joy and comfort her”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +0)

Hunter lets the crate sit where it is and reaches for Joy instead. He gathers her up close against his side, one arm around her shoulders, the other clearing her a little space from the rolling apples.

Hunter McCready
Her hands are cold.
Joy folds into him, her worry easing as his shirt catches the edge of her cheek. The wobble in the crate keeps waiting, but it stops being the only thing in the room.

Joy
Is Daddy okay?

Hunter McCready
I am okay. You are okay.

Mrs. Gable
That is the right order for a hard moment.

Elias
Then we steady the crate after this one.
Joy clutches his sleeve and peeks toward the apples, calmer now. Hunter keeps her tucked in close while the barn settles around them, the flowers in Mrs. Gable’s arm bright against the dim straw.
“I keep holding Joy and ask for help”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled -1)

Hunter stays braced around Joy and lifts his chin toward the others. The words come out quiet, but they land clear in the warm barn air.

Hunter McCready
Need a hand with the crate.

Mrs. Gable
Gladly. I have two steady hands and no pride about using them.

Elias
I’ll take the loose side. You keep Joy settled.
Mrs. Gable steps in near the leaning crate while Elias shifts closer to the apples, both of them moving with practiced ease. Joy relaxes further against Hunter’s chest as the family work spreads into a shared rhythm.

Joy
Can I help too?
A soft crack answers before anyone can reply, and one board in the crate gives way with a dull pop. A few apples bump free toward Hunter’s boot, turning Joy’s question into a new little pause.
Mrs. Gable glances from the broken slat to Joy, ready to soothe her, while Elias pauses with one hand on the crate and waits for Hunter’s call.
“I steady the crate with Elias”
SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled -1)

Hunter shifts his weight and drives a shoulder into the crate with Elias. The loose side squares up again, and the apples stop jittering toward the floor.

Elias
That’s it. Hold there a second.
Elias presses in from the other side, and together they settle the warped wood back onto the support. Mrs. Gable stays ready at Joy’s side, her flowers tucked against her apron.

Joy
It stopped wobbling.
The crate gives one last tired creak, then sits still. A small spill of apples remains on the straw, but the load holds.

Mrs. Gable
Good. Now that it’s behaving, we can sort the rest without a rescue.
Joy eases out of Hunter’s arms and reaches toward the nearest apple, looking between the crate and her father for permission to join in.
