Joyous Hunting

The Clerk leans over the counter and slides a handwritten note toward Hunter, her fingers shaking so hard the paper skims the wood. She keeps her eyes on the ledger instead of on him.

Joy tugs at Hunter's hand, then looks up at his face as the room keeps arguing around them. The Manager's voice carries from the side office, sharp and impatient.

Hunter reaches for the note while the Clerk pulls back fast, like she has already risked too much. Mrs. Gable squares her shoulders across the counter, ready to catch whatever comes next.

The Manager turns her head at the movement, just enough to notice the shift. The Clerk lowers her gaze again, hands still trembling, as if waiting for the room to decide what she has become.

Hunter tips the note into the crook of his palm and slips one thumb under the fold. He keeps his shoulders angled toward Joy, using her as a small screen between the paper and the Manager.

The paper opens just enough to show a line of hurried writing before he flattens it against his cuff. The Clerk looks up once, sees that he has it, and immediately looks away again.

Mrs. Gable’s eyes flick to Hunter’s hand, then to the Manager, reading the room in a single sharp glance. The Manager goes very still at the counter, the office noise thinning around her silence.

Hunter has the note open now, hidden low and close, with the ink visible only to him and the Clerk. Joy stays tucked against his side, watching his face while the office waits for his next move.

Hunter lowers his eyes to the note and finally catches the bottom line. The handwriting tightens there, like the writer ran out of time.

It is not a warning about the meeting. It is a timing cue, tied to when the office expects the lane to clear.

Mrs. Gable straightens a fraction, reading Hunter’s face, while the Manager’s stare sharpens across the room.

The Clerk’s fingers hover over the ledger, not helping, not stopping it either. Her eyes keep flicking between Hunter and the Manager, measuring who moves first.

The office falls into a brittle pause, with the note still open in Hunter’s hand and the Clerk waiting for his choice.

Hunter closes his hand hard over the note, crumpling it into a tight ball. His other hand dips at once, and the paper vanishes into his pocket under the edge of his coat.

The Clerk’s shoulders twitch at the counter, her gaze snapping to the pocket, then to the Manager. Mrs. Gable shifts one step nearer to Hunter, not touching him, just making the space feel smaller and firmer.

The Manager goes still, all the motion in the room thinning into a hard pause. The ledger stays open, the pen cup untouched, while the Clerk keeps watching Hunter like she has already chosen to say more.

The office tightens around that admission, with Joy close at Hunter’s side and Mrs. Gable braced beside the counter. The Clerk’s fingers curl against the ledger edge, waiting to see whether Hunter speaks first or the Manager does.
