Joyous Hunting

The truck cab stays tight and still as Evelyn finishes the last copied lines from the routing logs. The notebook rests on the open window frame between them, pages crowded with dates, stamps, and hurried margin notes.

She taps a thin pencil line beside the clerk's timing cue, then circles the word again in Hunter's copy. The note is not about delay. It is about arrival.

Hunter takes the notebook in one hand and stares at the copied entry until the stamps blur together. The abstract pressure from the office snaps into something scheduled, local, and immediate.

Outside the cab, the gravel shoulder and road lie quiet under a pale sky. Inside, Evelyn keeps her finger on the margin note while Hunter holds the page steady, both of them staring at the same small line as if it can be argued with.

Hunter folds the notebook shut and slips it inside his jacket before Evelyn can lift the page away. The paper vanishes against his chest, flat and protected.

Her eyes flick to the road, then back to him, sharper now. The copied routing log is no longer just evidence, it is something they can carry.

She slides a second page across the cab window frame, already marked with a clean, handwritten contact path and a time beside it.

Outside, a sedan rolls by on the road and slows just long enough for the driver to tilt toward the truck, as if confirming Hunter is still here.
