Seren's Dangerous Confession
Seren Arcal
Seren Arcal

By dusk, the journey pauses beneath tall pines. The Ashen Fells rise beyond the darkening forest, their glassy slopes catching the last red light. Far behind, the scarred soldier and Lenn remain at their woodland post, while Seren and Almira camp beside the maps.

Seren kneels beside a small, smokeless fire, stirring roots and grains in an iron pot. His maps lie weighted beneath stones, their blank margins turned toward the mountain pass.

Seren Arcal

Seren Arcal

You have spoken of Creation Arcana, healing, and the secrets beneath the world. But when forbidden knowledge is not before you, Almira, what do you hope to discover about yourself?

He serves the meal into two wooden bowls, then hesitates before touching his own. Firelight reveals a narrow scar beneath his curls, pale against his temple.

Seren Arcal

Seren Arcal

There is something I should have told you before inviting you north. These maps are not my first attempt to cross the Ashen Fells.

Seren Arcal

Seren Arcal

My teacher went there three years ago and never returned. I found his final chart in a ruined observatory, marked with a road no living surveyor remembers. I have hidden that truth because I feared any companion would turn back.

Seren places the untouched bowl near Almira, his openness costing him more than the simple confession suggests. Beyond the fire, the mountain wind begins to murmur through the pines.

Reach the Ashen Fells

“I reach for his hand in a gesture of reassurance, I chose to go with you into the unknown I do not fear where our path leads. I'll start with a truth as well, the cost of My long life, was the life of my mentor, since the beginning only one Master of Creation Arcana could exist, and when that master grows weary they set an apprentice down the path, teaching only the e basics and then giving their life to extend the apprentices indefinitely, time has no affect though wounds can still kill.. After the Apprentice goes on a journey to discover themselves and the Arcana which is scattered.. along this path we may uncover forbidden truths, things that would destroy a normal mind.. I ask in an unsure tone, now that you know do you still want me to come along”

Almira reaches across the fire and takes Seren's hand. Their fingers close around his, steady despite the mountain wind stirring the pines.

Almira

I chose to follow you into the unknown, Seren. I do not fear where our path leads. My long life was bought with my mentor's life. Only one Master of Creation Arcana may exist, and when that master grows weary, they teach an apprentice the beginnings before giving their life to extend the apprentice indefinitely. Time cannot touch me, though wounds still can.

Almira

Afterward, the apprentice must discover themselves and the scattered Arcana. Along this path we may uncover forbidden truths, things capable of destroying a normal mind. Now that you know, do you still want me to come along?

Seren's hand tightens around Almira's, but his hopeful expression falters. He looks toward the blank margins of his maps, as though their emptiness has become a warning rather than an invitation.

Seren Arcal

Seren Arcal

I still want you beside me, but I cannot pretend I understand what I have agreed to. If the Fells hold truths that can break a mind, I need more than courage and trust.

Seren Arcal

Seren Arcal

I will not ask you to leave. Instead, show me the first lesson your master gave you, and let us judge the danger together before we enter the pass.

He turns one weighted map toward the fire, revealing a faintly inked road beneath the familiar markings. The route ends at the ruined observatory, offering a safer first truth to uncover together.

“I share with him a story, speaking seductivly like my master did to me so I hung on every word, describing everything so it was easy to imagine, I told him of a vision of the creation, a planet growing from a grain, life springing up all over, the first touches of Civilization. Then I show the connection between all things and Creation Arcana. You see we are the guardians of the connection between all things, we heal where no other may, and guide life towards a peaceful future. Though we know the evils and darkness of the world better any other and must learn to master our own darkness and light.”

My master taught me with a voice like this, so each word became a world. Creation began as a grain, small enough to cradle in darkness, then it swelled into a living planet. Seas gathered, mountains rose, and life unfurled across every shore. At last came the first fires of civilization, fragile lights beneath an endless sky.

Firelight moves across Seren's face as Almira's tale gives shape to the unseen. The blank margins of his map seem to deepen, as though distant seas and newborn cities wait beneath the ink.

Almira

Creation Arcana is the thread joining every part of that becoming. We are its guardians, Seren: healers where no other power can reach, and guides who turn life toward a peaceful future.

Almira's voice lowers, intimate and patient, making the doctrine feel less like a lesson than a secret entrusted to the night. Seren does not touch his bowl or look away.

Almira

Almira

Yet we know darkness better than most. To guard the connection between all things, we must master the darkness and light within ourselves, or become another wound in the world.

For a long moment, only the wind answers. Seren's fingers close around the edge of the map, and wonder overtakes his caution as completely as dawn overtakes the last red glow.

Seren Arcal

Then your art is not merely power. It is stewardship of the world's first breath. Almira, I believe you, and I will enter the Fells knowing the road carries a duty greater than either of us.

“I thank him and gently kiss his cheek, still using seductive tones to tease information, and accent my intentions and nobody has ever understood even half of what he does, maybe as master said this road I didn't have to travel alone. I thank him for his kindness and bravery when facing the unknown. Without realizing I hadn't dropped the seductive tone from the previous conversation I ask about his teachers final charts”

Thank you, Seren. Your kindness and bravery make this road feel less lonely. Perhaps my master was right: I was never meant to travel it alone. And no one has understood even half of what I do.

Almira leans across the fire and kisses Seren's cheek, lingering just long enough for gratitude to blur into their familiar, teasing seduction. Seren goes still, then smiles despite himself.

Almira

Almira

Tell me about your teacher's final charts, darling. What did they reveal, and why did you hide them from every other companion?

Seren Arcal

Seren Arcal

The final chart was not a map of the Fells as they are. It showed a second landscape beneath them, with roads drawn through stone and a stair descending beneath the observatory.

Seren retrieves a leather tube from beside his satchel and loosens its cord. He spreads a brittle vellum across the map, revealing silver ink that glimmers whenever the fire gutters.

Seren Arcal

Seren Arcal

My teacher marked three symbols beside the stair: a sealed eye, a root wrapped around a star, and a warning written in a hand I did not recognize. I copied every line before the observatory collapsed.

He turns the vellum toward Almira without hesitation. The hidden road now lies openly between them, its silver lines pointing north beneath the darkening pines.

“Inspect the markings for Creation Arcana could it be a message from those before”

Almira opens the Book Of Arcana beside the brittle vellum and studies the sealed eye, the star-bound root, and the unfamiliar warning in the firelight. The symbols resist every familiar pattern.

Almira

Almira

The markings may be a message from those who came before, but I cannot identify its hand or language.

When Almira aligns the book's diagrams with the chart, the silver ink abruptly rearranges itself. The sealed eye opens, and a cold radiance spills across both pages.

Seren Arcal

Seren Arcal

Almira, stop. That was not ink shifting. It is answering you.

A thin silver line leaps from the vellum into the Book Of Arcana, tracing a new symbol across its open page. The stair beneath the observatory fades from Seren's chart.

Seren Arcal

Seren Arcal

The route is gone. Whatever message those markings carried, your attempt has sealed the answer inside your book instead.

The book snaps shut around the glowing mark and will not open again. On the vellum, only the three symbols remain, altered now: the eye watches, the root points downward, and the star is crossed out.

Reassure Seren about the danger of the Book of Arcana

“Using seductive tones of reassurance, I tell him that the master said it would only do this if a Creation Master had sealed away some dark secret. And if I were to encounter it, I must learn to master it.”

Almira

Do not fear it, Seren. My master said the Book Of Arcana answers this way only when a Creation Master has sealed away some dark secret. If I encounter it, I must learn to master it.

Almira's seductive reassurance softens the terror in the firelit clearing. The sealed book loosens beneath their fingers, and its cover opens to a page of blackness circled by silver roots.

Seren Arcal

Seren Arcal

You say that as though the secret chose you. I believe you, Almira. I believe you intend to master it, not merely uncover it.

Within the dark page, a single pale line forms a stair descending through stone. At its foot waits a tiny sealed eye, identical to the mark on the vellum.

Seren Arcal

Seren Arcal

But you concealed the danger until the book answered you. That costs us the easy trust I offered. From now on, no secret of this road stays yours alone.

Almira

Almira

The book has revealed a path beneath the observatory.

Seren does not withdraw. He places one hand beside the opened book, accepting the bargain even as suspicion remains between them, bright and sharp as the silver stair.
