A shrill crash splits the air. Two huge winged predators tangle overhead, claws locked, and drop like a smashed star into the brush shelf.

The root cover bursts apart on impact. Wings thrash across the ledge, chattering beaks snapping inches from Hhannvis and the others.

Sefru jerks back, spear half-raised, while The Blond Elf flinches toward the newly opened passage. Huryol braces low, trying to keep the group from being dragged into the fall.

Down, now. They will tear the shelf apart.

Hhannvis

The roots are broken open, and the passage is still there.

One beast scrabbles free, but the other slams sideways into the brush again, blocking the ledge and forcing the party to choose fast between the cliff edge and the opened root line.

Huryol

Huryol

This is the way, Hhannvis. If we live through it, we keep moving to the basin tribes.

Hhannvis drives the spear forward from the torn roots, using the predator’s own lunge against it.

The point bites true. The beast shrieks, wings pitching hard as it twists off the ledge and drags brush with it.

Its partner recoils from the blow, beak snapping at empty air, then flaps backward into the open space above the shelf.

Sefru

Sefru

There, again, now, push it off!

Huryol surges up from his brace and the Blond Elf steps into the gap, forcing the second predator to lose ground toward the cliff side.

For a breath, the shelf clears. The root passage stands open behind them, shaking loose leaves down into the dark.

But the thrashing in the brush does not stop, and Sefru points sharply toward the exposed opening, waiting for the next move.

I get out the way

Hhannvis snaps back from the ledge as the roots shudder under another impact. The spear comes clear, and he is out of the beasts' path.

The nearest predator lunges where he stood a breath ago, claws raking only bark and air. Its weight slides it wide of the shelf.

Sefru

Sefru

Move, now! Through the roots!

Huryol checks the edge with one arm out, guarding the opening while the Blond Elf shifts sideways to cover the flank.

Hhannvis

Hhannvis

The shelf is clear for the moment.

Above them, one wing beats hard and drags the brush open wider, but both predators are forced back from the passage by the party's push.

Sefru points into the root-lined gap, jaw tight, waiting on the others to commit before the shelf collapses into noise again.

I look for an easy climb down

Hhannvis turns from the shelf and tests the wall below the roots. The stone holds, rough and dry, with a slanted seam he can work by hand and boot.

Hhannvis

Hhannvis

The handholds are real.

He commits to the drop, weight moving cleanly into the line of the wall, spear angled close so it does not snag.

Pebbles skitter under his heel and click away into the dark, a sharp little sound that carries down the Pit.

Sefru

Sefru

There, keep low. That seam runs to the ledge below.

Hhannvis reaches the lower shelf in one controlled descent, but the scrape of it strips bark from the roots above and leaves a pale gouge behind him.

Below, the passage mouth yawns open, and the climbing route is now his.

I keep gauging safe descents and continue down

Hhannvis plants his boot on the lower shelf and keeps moving, testing each hold before he trusts it. The wall gives him rough, honest purchase, and the passage mouth opens wider below.

Hhannvis

Hhannvis

The ledge line is stable.

He shifts his weight, drops one hand to a lower seam, and descends with measured speed, spear kept tight against his side so it never catches.

Sefru

Sefru

Good, go on. The roots hold there. I am coming after you.

Above, Sefru pulls back from the rim and the others make room, while the gouged wall and hanging bark mark Hhannvis's path down into the opening.

By the time he reaches the mouth, the shelf behind him is only a narrow bridge to the ledge, and the root-lined passage waits dark and still ahead.

I secure my spear in its back sling

Hhannvis settles the spear across his back and threads it into the sling in one smooth motion. The haft clicks into place against his cape, suddenly hands-free.

Hhannvis

Hhannvis

The strap holds.

As the weapon seats, the root passage answers with a dry creak, and a strip of bark flakes loose from the arch above him.

Sefru

Sefru

Good. That leaves both your arms free if the ceiling starts talking.

Sefru’s warning lands with a nervous glance upward, but he keeps his spear ready and edges closer to the opening, watching the dark behind Hhannvis.

Huryol

Huryol

Move on. We have the mouth.

Below the arch, the passage widens just enough to show a safer bend inward, and the empty shelf behind them shivers with distant wingbeats fading away into the Pit.

Hhannvis leaves Root-lined passage behind and arrives at The Pit.

I make my way down the drop to the titanic basin "The Pit's" edge and gauge a safe spot to climb and how much more to climb

SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled +0)

The passage spits Hhannvis out onto the Pit’s black pebble shelf, where the world drops away in a brutal curve. He plants his weight, judges the slope, and spots a narrow ledge of packed roots and stone that can take a careful climb, maybe twice his height before the face steepens.

Beneath him, the basin opens like a sunless bowl, ribbed with cliff shadows and distant green depth. Wind combs the ledge clean, carrying the smell of damp earth and old reptile musk.

Sefru

Sefru

That shelf holds. Beyond it, the wall eases by the thorn roots.

Sefru leans out from the passage mouth, spear braced, but his eyes keep darting between Hhannvis and the open air. His grip is steady enough, his stance less so.

Hhannvis

Hhannvis

The climb is short, but the footing is thin.

A shadow passes over the shelf, then another, high above the rim. The winged predators are gone from the ledge, but their circling shapes still cut across the light, waiting for an opening.

Huryol

Huryol

Take the wall now, before they come back low.
