Hhannvis steps into the small stone room, and the crawlway shuts the basin noise into a thin, distant murmur. Through the slit, the Pit lies below in smoke and black pebble walls, but here the air is colder, still, almost kind.

Sefru leans one shoulder to the wall and finally lowers his spear. Huryol stays near the opening, watching the light through the slit, his jaw tight with everything he has not said.

We made it this far. By the old stones, we actually made it this far.

Huryol

For a moment, let the basin fight without us. The tribes can still breathe, if only for this moment.

Hhannvis

The room is old, but it holds.

Sefru

You keep finding doors that should not open. I am starting to think the Pit likes you.

Or it is listening. There is a difference, and it matters.

Below them, the flicker of struggle continues, far enough away to feel like weather. Inside the room, the three stand in a brief pocket of safety, sharing quiet, breath, and the strange relief of not being chased for once.

I pray and in the prayer focus on gratefulness

Hhannvis lowers his head in the cold little chamber, and his prayer settles into the stone instead of echoing off it.

Hhannvis

Hhannvis

He counts what remains, the shelter, the living, the breath in the room.

Gratitude comes easy here. For the slit of light, for the walls, for Sefru still standing, for Huryol still watching, for the survivors not in sight but still alive below.

The frost on his spear quiets to a steady gleam, and the room seems to take the thanks with him.

Sefru

Sefru

That is a kinder kind of power than most I have seen. It feels... safer, hearing it from you.

Huryol

Huryol

The old stones answer to truth. Gratitude counts as truth, if a man means it.

Outside the slit, distant motion still flickers in the basin, but inside the room the three of them share the quiet without flinching from it.

Sefru

Stay a moment longer. Let the room hold us before we go back to being brave.

I say, this spot is a good spot tactically. We need to round up the rest of the basin while avoiding threats. We can camp in this spot between our trips and rest out of immediate danger.

Hhannvis lifts his head and answers the room with a calm, practical certainty. The chamber holds as a base, a place to catch breath, sort the living, and wait between runs into the Pit.

Hhannvis

Hhannvis

This is a good spot tactically. We can rest here, round up the rest of the basin, and come back through this room between trips.

Huryol

Huryol

A fair claim. The stones are hidden, and the path is narrow. That matters now.

Sefru

Then we keep it quiet, and we keep it ours. I can stand watch when the others need sleep.

A faint scrape answers from the dark beyond the hollow, and both men still at once. The room stays safe, but its silence grows thinner.

Hhannvis marks the chamber in the only way that matters here, by presence, by timing, by the spear set ready within reach. The frost-light on it drinks the dimness and steadies.

Huryol

Huryol

If trouble comes, it comes to us with warning now. That is better than meeting it in the basin.
