The Blond Elf scrambles back onto the lip, pale and scraped, and the black pebbles still trickle where he slipped. The slope looks less like a slide now and more like a near-sheer skin of stone all around the rim.

The Blond Elf
By the gods, that edge lies.
From the scrub, the low hissing returns, not random at all. It comes in measured bursts, like a watch signal passed mouth to mouth through hidden reeds.

Huryol
Tribe sentries. They are measuring us.

Hhannvis
This place is dangerous. We choose now, run the edge for safer climbing, or take this spot.

Hhannvis
These woods can smell a clean man.
The hissing stops at once, as if something in the brush has heard and understood. A beat later, the unseen watcher answers with one longer note, waiting.
“I look well around and over to see if here or nearby is truly scaleable safely enough”
SUCCESS (Good Perception, rolled +0)

Hhannvis scans the rim and the drop beyond it. The slope is not a single slide, but a broken seam, with a narrow tread of packed pebbles hiding under the loose black stones.

Hhannvis
There is a usable line down, if the footing holds.
He spots it, a bent run that angles left under a jut of root and stone, then dips into a darker shelf below.
The cost lands at once, the loose cap gives under his boot and sends a sharp rattle down the face, loud enough to betray where he has been looking.

Huryol
You see it too. Good. That line holds better than the straight fall.

The Blond Elf
Then we do not rush. One at a time, and keep to the left.
From the scrub, the hidden watcher shifts, and the hissing starts again, now closer and no longer testing.
“I hold, on my way down with gargoyale grip and keep ready to cast any of them safe as we all go down”
SUCCESS (Good Athletics, rolled -1)

Hhannvis lowers himself onto the shelf, spear braced across his body, and the black pebbles bite and slide under his boots. He keeps his weight close to the stone, using the jut of root and rock to anchor each step.
A faint blue flicker gathers around his free hand, ready to catch anyone who slips. The descent starts cleanly, but the loose cap gives way in a whispering spill behind him.

Hhannvis
The shelf holds better than it looks.
Below, the darker ledge opens under him, and the hidden watcher’s hiss stops being a test. It comes from the left-hand scrub, low and fixed, as if something has taken his measure.

Huryol
There. Left side. It has spotted us.

The Blond Elf
Keep moving, one at a time. Do not break the line.
Hhannvis reaches the lower shelf in control, but his boot scrapes hard enough to send a fresh rattle into the basin. The brush ahead parts by a finger’s width, and something unseen shifts to meet them.

“I climb down”
SUCCESS (Good Athletics, rolled +0)
Hhannvis drops the last handspan onto the shelf and takes his full weight on it. Pebbles burst outward under his boots, and he has to twist his spear aside to keep from skidding into the drop.
A sharp stone kisses his shin through the robe folds, enough to sting but not stop him. Above, the higher ledge trembles with the others’ shifting feet as they watch his landing.
The scrub to the left parts wider. Not a beast’s lunge, a measured crouch, low and hidden, with the hiss now close enough to place.

Huryol
There, on the left. Three shapes, maybe more. They are ringed around the shelf.

The Blond Elf
Hold. Do not crowd the edge. Let them show themselves first.

Hhannvis
The watcher is close enough to mark, but not yet fully seen.
The hidden presence answers with a second hiss, deeper this time, and the brush on the lower shelf flexes as if someone shifts a weapon behind it. The path is still open, but only if the sentries allow the line to keep moving.

Identify the sentries
“I cast alive the bush theyre in to attack them”
FAILURE (Good Arcana, rolled -1)

Hhannvis gathers the brush with a tight flare of arcana. The leaves shiver hard, then snap upright in a crooked lash, as if the bush itself has woken angry.
The spell stutters. A ring of thorns twitches at the sentries' cover, but it bends back on itself, more warning than strike.

Huryol
They are right there, by the roots. Do you see the spearpoints? There.
The brush parts on its own, just enough to expose three crouched heads and the dark line of a raised spear. No attack comes, but the shelf is no longer a secret.

The Blond Elf
Good. Now they know we know them.

Hhannvis
The left root line hides a body-sized gap.
The driven branches keep quivering, pinned between Hhannvis's failed charm and the sentries' sudden stillness. One watcher shifts back into cover, leaving the exposed gap open or inviting a rush.

“I say, tell us why youre here or run”
FAILURE (Mediocre Diplomacy, rolled -2)

Hhannvis
Tell us why you are here, or run.
The words land in the brush like a thrown stone. For a breath, nobody moves.

Huryol
Good. Speak plainly. We are not your prey.

The Blond Elf
If you mean to bar the path, do it openly.
A low hiss answers from the roots, then another. One hidden watcher shifts sideways, dragging the gap wider with a careful hand.

Huryol
They are not soldiers. Watch the hands, not the mouths.

The Blond Elf
There, on the left. One of them is holding the line open.
The sentries remain crouched, but their spearpoints angle down, not out. The root-tangle now shows a passage just big enough for one wary body at a time.
Gain safe passage past the sentries
“I charm them”
SUCCESS (Good Arcana, rolled +1)
Hhannvis lets the spell settle into the gap between breaths, not pushed, just held there like warm water. The hidden sentries stiffen, then their shoulders ease as the charm reaches them.

The Guide
He found the right thread. Good. Let them feel safe first.

The Blond Elf
Easy now. We are here for passage, not blood.
One sentry lifts his head from the roots. Their spearpoint drops fully to the side, and the passage stops feeling like a trap.

Sentry One
You carry old mountain magic... and too much metal. But your voice is plain.
The charm works, but it takes something from Hhannvis, a sharp pulse behind the eyes and a faint shimmer of blue dust from his scarf that the sentries notice.

Huryol
Then we speak as travelers. Tell us your name, and we will answer with ours.

Sentry One
I am Sefru. The roots here hide our watch, and your descent has been seen by others below.
Sefru’s hand stays on the opening, but his gaze angles past Hhannvis toward the basin, as if deciding whether to warn or to lead.
