Dawn of Man, Dinosaur Era Fantasy - Descent into the Basin of Shadows

The ladder shudders under Hhannvis’s weight and the refugees above it. Below, the chamber’s frost-light pulses harder, tasting panic and blood.

A yellow-green striped Utahraptor snaps out of the dark and crashes onto a failed refugee. Its jaws lock on a raised arm and neck, and the pair slam and roll across the stone dais.

The blind green alpha raptor lifts its head at the noise. Its clicks answer the smaller beast, then its muzzle swings toward the ceiling ledge where Hhannvis clings.

Huryol hauls one survivor higher. Sefru reaches for the crawlway lip, and Zarona’s smoke coils tight, guarding the moving line.

The chamber’s seam glows with the drain, then brightens toward the struggle below, as if it hungers for one more choice. Hhannvis is left with a clear opening, get the survivors through the crawlway, or hold the ladder and buy them seconds.

Hhannvis surges up the ladder with the survivors in tow, his grip steadying the whole line as the rope bites and swings. Huryol heaves the last refugee toward the lip, while Sefru catches them by the shoulder and drags them into the wall opening.

The crawlway yawns wider than it first looks, a shallow groove cut into old stone. Zarona folds smoke across the lower chamber, masking the movement above the dais as the siphon flares brighter behind them.

Below, the blind alpha raptor hesitates, muzzle lifting as it tracks the shifting rope and the hidden scent trail. The yellow-green raptor snarls over its prey, but the line is already breaking away from its reach.

Hhannvis drives the group through the crawlway in a single push, forcing the frightened bodies to file into the narrow stone throat. The chamber’s glow licks at their heels, then loses them.

The remaining refugees clear the ledge and vanish into the upper seam’s cover, safe for the moment. Behind them, the predators stay below the opening, blocked by the wall and the thinning line of scent.
