Bloodline Debt and the Resonant Hunt

The ravine narrows around Neko, shale slick underfoot and black walls rising tight on both sides. Ahead, the shell-backed beast is pinned at the cliff face, its shell scraping stone as it huffs in short, ragged pulls.

Neko draws in stillness, sword leveled. The beast turns fully toward him, all hard plates and wary eyes, as if it knows the way out is blocked.

A brass contract token bumps against Neko's gear, a cold reminder of the silver waiting only if the beast falls. Another thought follows close behind, thin as the ravine air, these contracts keep leading to dead hunters.

It lowers its head and scrapes one foreclaw along the stone, testing the narrow footing. The beast is trapped, but not helpless.

Neko stands at the mouth of the ravine with the hunt finally in reach, the debt in the distance, and the truth of the contracts pressing closer with every breath.

Neko lunges. His greatsword flashes up under the beast’s guard, and the blade bites high at the neck seam with a wet crack of shell and scale.

The shell-beast jerks hard against the cliff face. Stone chips scatter, its foreclaw scrapes uselessly for purchase, and its head slumps sideways under the blow.

The creature gives a rough, choking hiss, then sags lower in the narrow gap, pinned by pain and the ravine wall.

Black shale skitters beneath Neko’s boots as he holds his line, blade still set where the strike landed.

The beast twists once more, too trapped to flee, its shell grinding against stone.

For a beat, the ravine goes tight and silent around them, the guild token at Neko’s gear cold against his side while the shell-beast’s head hangs within reach.

Neko lowers the greatsword and kneels in the shale, working with practiced care. He frees the beast’s head at the opened seam, then strips a few hard shell plates and a slick pouch of useful gland tissue into separate bundles for the guild and the alchemy kit.

The shell-beast lies still while he sorts the salvage, its weight dragging a shallow groove in the ravine floor. Fresh chips of stone cling to the blood-dark hide, and the head comes away heavy in his hands.

He wipes the blade on the beast’s shell, then checks the cut pieces by touch, setting aside anything too brittle to sell. The useful parts go into his pack with the contract token and the rest of the spoil.

The ravine remains tight and quiet, but the shape of the hunt has changed. What was a trapped enemy is now proof, salvage, and coin waiting to be weighed.

Neko shifts the bundled head against his grip and squares himself toward the ravine mouth, prepared to leave with the reward in hand.
