Neko steps back into the family hall, rain still beading on his cloak. The hearth gives off a weak glow, and the room seems to breathe again when the reprieve rests safe in his tunic.

His father pauses with the rusted spear half-sharpened, then lowers it. The old wood beams creak overhead. The mother and brother straighten from the corner, watching Neko as if the paper might vanish if they blink.

You have it, then.

Neko draws out the reprieve and lets the seal catch the firelight. The father’s shoulders loosen by a handspan, though fatigue still clings to his face.

The Mother

The Mother

Show me the mark.

The mother takes the parchment carefully, like it is warmer than the hearth. The brother leans close beside her, reading every line with bright, stubborn hope.

The Brother

The Brother

Winter, then. We have time.

The father gives a short breath that is almost a laugh, and sets the spear aside. For the first time tonight, no one is packing. The hall grows quiet enough to hear the fire settle.

I tell them that I intend to leave tonight to start my journey of making money. I pack enough food to make it to the next city.

The quiet in the hall breaks when Neko says he leaves tonight, and the words land cleanly. His mother looks up from the parchment, his father rests both hands on the table edge, and his brother straightens at once.

Tonight? Then take the salted bread, the dried apples, and the last clean cloth wraps.

Neko moves to the road kit and opens it wide. He stacks food inside with practical care, choosing enough for the next city and a little more besides.

Neko

Neko

Food first. Then the road.

If you mean to strike out now, you should also take my map of the river road. It cuts a day off the march.

His father reaches into the trunk and produces a folded scrap marked with charcoal turns and old watch points. The brother catches sight of it and grins despite himself.

The Brother

Then you are not just leaving. You are leaving with an advantage.

The mother ties the last bundle shut and presses the reprieve back into Neko’s hand, the seal still warm from the fire. Around them, the hall feels less like a tomb and more like a house choosing to endure. Their hope settles on him plainly, heavy but steady.

Map of the river road

Neko leaves Crumbling castle great hall behind and arrives at the river road.

I hug them and say my goodbyes promising to return by winter. After saying my goodbyes I follow my father's map and leave home.

SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled -1)

The river road greets him with wet stones, reed-choked banks, and a wind that smells of mud and cold water. Neko walks with the map open in one hand, the other carrying the weight of the family seal tucked safely away.

Neko

Neko

I will be back by winter.

He reaches the roadside bend where the path forks around a half-fallen milestone, then pauses long enough to study the charcoal marks. The river keeps its own counsel beside him, dark and steady.

The shortest turn angles east along the bank, where old watch points rise above the reeds. Whoever drew this knew where travelers can cut time without losing the road.

Neko folds the map once and sets off, his pace sure on the slick ground. Behind him, the castle is only memory and distance now.

A shape moves on the far side of the river, then vanishes into the fog before it can be named. The current carries something pale past the bend, snagging briefly on a root.

The road continues ahead, and the first watch point stands in sight, half-swallowed by reeds.
