Bloodline Debt and the Resonant Hunt

Mud sucks at Neko’s boots as he gathers the last of the spoils beside the shell monster’s corpse. The hunter’s torn gear lies half-buried in black water, and the mist closes in again.

A shape parts from the reeds, careful and slow, one hand lifted to show no threat. It is Neko’s brother, wet-haired and tense, scanning the carcass and the scattered gear.

His gaze drops to the recovered tag and the pouch of silver in Neko’s hand. The color drains from his face as he looks past them to the broken body in the mud.

The marsh goes still around them, with only water dripping from the shell fragments. Whatever Neko says next will decide whether this meeting turns to grief, gratitude, or a harder bargain.

Neko lowers the tag toward the corpse, then extends two fingers to the black water. The wet mud takes his attention with the same cold certainty as the body itself.

The Brother shuts his eyes for a breath, then opens them on the scattered gear. Neko’s coin pouch rattles softly as he tips it open over his palm.

Silver marks and smaller coins slide out together, dulled by marsh damp. He counts them once, then again, the total still too light for comfort.

Neko separates the damp silver again, slower this time, thumb brushing grit from each mark as if the coins might tell a truer number. The pile is smaller than the debt hanging over his house, but it is real. He gathers half into his own hand, then pours the rest toward his brother.

The coins land in the brother’s palm with a soft, heavy clink. He closes his fingers around them, then looks from the silver to Neko’s face, as if measuring what part of their family still stands upright.

He huffs a breath that is almost a laugh, almost a sob, and folds the coins into his belt pouch. The marsh wind presses cold through the reeds, but between them the handoff feels stubbornly warm.

The question hangs over the dead shell monster and the fallen hunter’s tag. The brother does not step away. He waits, eyes fixed on Neko, for an answer that is more than silver.

Neko lets the question sit, then answers it with a rough honesty. He has not been carrying it alone for long, but he has been carrying it.

He steps in before the silence can harden, wraps his brother in a quick, firm hug, and feels the chill in the marsh scrub off on borrowed warmth.

Neko glances down at the contracts in his hand, the guild tokens brushing his palm. He folds one under his thumb, then turns toward the marsh path.

The brother releases him and shifts the silver deeper into his pouch, readying the walk home while the dead hunter’s tag still lies in the mud between them.

Neko gives his brother one last nod, then turns from the tag in the mud and strides into the reeds. The marsh swallows his boots, and the path ahead narrows into wet green lanes.

He checks the brass token and the shell-backed beast contract as he walks, keeping the paper dry under one hand. Fresh tracks press through the mire ahead, broad and heavy enough to matter.

Behind him, the brother stays at the edge of the reeds, silent now, while the wind shifts and stirs the hunter’s torn gear. Ahead, a broken trail threads toward deeper water.

Neko follows it without hesitation, angling past shell shards half-buried in silt. The prints lead toward a low stand of cattails where the mud darkens and the air smells rank.

He reaches the place where the trail tightens, and the beast’s route becomes plain. Something has crossed here recently, and it has not gone far.
