Mist rolls thick over the river road, swallowing the wheels of a wagon line that has ground to a halt. Mud clings to the ruts, and the first watch point rises ahead like a dark tooth through the fog.

Drivers mutter and curse at the block, peering toward the unseen stretch of road where something moves just beyond sight.

Merchant Vane

Merchant Vane

You there, slayer. If you can scout the road and drive off what is stalking the mist, I pay in silver.

The merchant steps closer, cloak damp at the hem, and lifts a heavy purse that answers with a hard, promising weight.

Merchant Vane

Merchant Vane

No need to clear the whole road, just make it safe enough for the wagons to pass. The creatures have kept us waiting too long.

He lowers the purse into view, keeping his eyes on Neko’s sword and the alchemy kit at his belt, hopeful but wary.

Neko

Neko

How much silver?

Merchant Vane

Merchant Vane

Twenty marks now, twenty more when I see the path open. Take it, and the road is yours to make safe.

The wagons creak in place behind him, waiting on Neko’s answer while the fog shifts and hides the road beyond.

✓ Quest Accepted

Scout the mist-bound road and make it safe for the wagons

I take the purse and step into the thick fog to scout the road ahead. I use my survival skills to track what kind of beast it is.

Neko takes the purse, and the silver settles heavy into his hand. He steps off the wagon ruts and into the fog, leaving Merchant Vane behind as the river road closes around him.

The mist tastes wet and cold. Neko lowers his gaze to the mud, reading the tracks where the wheels stopped and where something else crossed beside them.

Neko

Neko

Fresh prints. Not human.

He follows the trail past the watch point’s shadow, where the ground dips toward the river. Broken reeds and a slick smear in the mud mark a path taken at speed.

A shape parts the fog ahead for a heartbeat, low to the ground and lean, then vanishes again without a sound. The trail answers at once, leading straight toward a narrow drain under the road.

Neko recognizes the signs of a marsh prowler, a road-stalker that hunts by wet ground and bad footing. He also spots pale shell shards snagged in the reeds, a useful clue for bait or alchemy.

Merchant Vane

Merchant Vane

Well? What is it? If you know the beast, say so.

I collect the shell shards and add them to my pack for later use. I draw my sword and follow the beast’s trail to the drain

Neko pinches the shell shards from the mud and slips them into his pack. The road seems to hold its breath as steel leaves the sheath with a soft ring.

Neko

Neko

Shell shards, fresh trail, drain below.

He starts forward, boots careful on the slick verge, sword low and ready. The fog folds around the blade as he follows the broken reeds toward the drain.

At the roadside lip, the mud sinks away into a narrow culvert cut beneath the road, black water whispering through it.

The prowler is no longer a rumor in the mist. A wet scrape answers from inside the drain, close enough to show this is its path, and its hiding place.

Merchant Vane

Merchant Vane

You found it? Good. Tell me if it can be driven off, or if I must hold the wagons here.

+ New Item Acquired

Shell shards

I press on into the drain determined to kill the beast.

SUCCESS (Superb Melee Combat, rolled +2)

Neko lowers his shoulders and slips into the culvert, sword first, then boots into the black water. The drain gulps him up as the fog swallows the road above.

Inside the narrow throat, the prowler lashes out. Neko meets it head-on, steel flashing once in the cramped dark, and the creature jerks still.

The body collapses into the stream with a scrape of shell and mud. Water rushes red-brown past Neko's legs, then starts to clear.

A stink of swamp rot and crushed reeds clings to the drain, but the wet scrape is gone. The culvert now lies open and silent.

Above, Merchant Vane's voice carries thinly through the fog. 'Well?' he calls. 'Is it dead?'

Neko

Neko

It's dead. The drain is clear.

Vane exhales in a long, shaky breath from the road. The stalled wagons wait behind him, but the way ahead no longer sounds hunted.

I take what I can from the beast to use in alchemy and tell Vane the road is clear.

Neko kneels in the drain and works fast, cutting free a few hard shell plates, a claw tip, and a ribbon of reed-choked hide. He packs the usable pieces away before the current can take them.

The road above stays quiet. Fog moves in low sheets over the culvert mouth, and the clearing stream keeps muttering around the dead beast.

Neko

Neko

The road is clear now, Vane.

Merchant Vane

Merchant Vane

Good. Good, then. I was starting to think the ledger would claim us tonight.

Vane leans closer over the edge, his relief sharp but guarded, as if he still expects the fog to answer back.

Can you come up, or do you need a hand before we move the wagons?

I climb out of the culvert to meet Vane and collect my payment. I ask where he's going and if I can hitch a ride to the nearest town.

SUCCESS (Great Athletics, rolled +0)

Neko hauls himself up out of the culvert, water dripping from his boots onto the muddy verge. He comes level with the road beside Vane, the pouch at his belt heavier with salvage and silver already promised.

Merchant Vane

Merchant Vane

There you are. I had half a mind to send someone down after you, then I remembered who that would have been.

Merchant Vane

Merchant Vane

Your pay is yours, as agreed. And if you are asking where I travel, east first, then the nearest town with a counting house and a decent inn.

Vane fishes a small coin purse from inside his coat and offers it with a tired, grateful smile. Behind him, the wagon line waits in a slack, crooked row, drivers watching the culvert mouth and pretending not to.

Neko

Neko

Wherever you are bound, can I ride with you to the nearest town?

Merchant Vane

Merchant Vane

Aye. One swordsman in the wagon is cheaper than another night with the road full of teeth.

Merchant Vane

Merchant Vane

Climb aboard, then. We move when you are ready.

Climb into Vane's wagon. I take the time to mess with the alchemy set and ingredients I have.
