The Shell Monster

The marsh breathes rot and cold mist around Neko as he pushes past black reeds. Brass tokens clink in his pouch, a reminder that each beast brings him closer to the one hundred silver marks.

He finds a half-buried body in the mud, an older hunter by the look of the torn gear. The shell shards nearby are fresh enough to shine.

A shape rises from the reeds ahead. Shell-backed and wet with slime, the prowler blocks the narrow path toward deeper water.

Krrr...

Neko

Neko

Neko draws his greatsword and steps in.

The beast lurches forward, claws gouging the mire, while Neko angles toward its exposed side. One clean kill here means more salvage, more coin, and one step less between his family and the Baron.

The shell monster snaps its jaws and drives at him through the reeds, forcing the fight into the open mud.

I strike the shell monster's exposed side trying to kill it in one blow.

Ambush in the Marsh

Neko slips inside the beast’s reach and cuts low across its exposed flank. Steel bites through wet hide, and the shell monster jerks hard, its charge collapsing into the mud.

The creature crashes on its side, claws scraping furrows in the mire. Its jaws snap once at nothing, then go still.

Black water spreads under the body. Fresh shell shards jump free from the impact and scatter beside the older hunter’s remains.

Neko

Neko

It is dead.

The reeds around the path sway in the dying wake of the lunge. The marsh goes quiet except for the hiss of mist and Neko’s breath.

The bounty is not yet coin, but the kill is real, and the proof lies in the open mud before him.

I take the monsters head and hide, I also search the hunters remains.

SUCCESS (Legendary Survival, rolled +3)

Ambush in the Marsh

Neko kneels in the mud and goes to work with practiced hands. The beast’s head comes free, then the thick hide with it, heavy and slick with marsh water. He folds the spoil close, keeping the proof whole.

He turns to the fallen hunter and parts the soaked remains of the pack. A silver token, dulled by mud, lies under a torn strap beside a snapped strapknife and a sealed scrap of paper.

Neko

Neko

A contract tag.

Neko lifts the tag free. The seal is weather-stained, but the mark is still readable, and the reverse carries a route note toward the marsh road and the words of an old bounty assessment.

Under the hunter’s cloak, he finds a second gift, a small pouch of spent silver marks, half-buried in silt but untouched by rot.

The reeds shiver once. Beyond them, the open path waits, now littered with shell shards and blood-dark water, while Neko holds head, hide, and proof in one muddy armful.
